I am a gay man in my 40s who grew up as a child and teenager in a small Conservative town. Growing up in that toxic environment as a gay boy was very difficult. You couldn't come out for the risk of rejection and violence from multiple sources.
Although I kind of knew I was gay at a very young age, it was made absolutely clear when I developed a mad crush on a boy in High School. That didn't develop into anything. He was straight, of course.
I wanted to watch the Netflix series, but not before I read the original source material. I love these feel-good coming of age (and coming out) LGBTQ love stories because I think back to that crush and wish I was able to experience that when I was a boy. To just... be. I lost so much of my life because I couldn't do that.
It is nice to see that the current young generations are in a much more accepting society of fluid sexualities and genders. That's not to say that it's not bad in a lot of areas, but it is drastically better than when I was a boy.
This graphic novel perfectly captures that young love.
Una historia adorable sobre el enamoramiento juvenil y la realización sobre la identidad y el reconocimiento de la preferencia sexual. Es una opción muy tranquila para la gente que se va acercando a la literatura BL
Absolutely beautiful beginning to what one can see is an awkward and adorable relationship :)
Looking forward to the next volume. Though, I was a bit disappointed in the end when Nick left Charlie all alone, but, I think I can understand why.
This was a super fast read. Wasn't sure what to expect going into it as this isn't the typical book I go for. At first it seemed very YA and kind of bad, but I do like how it touched on the topics of sexual identity and how confusing that can be for a younger person. I also really appreciated the teacher basically telling those kids to mind their own business when they were speculating.
This is a really cute YA comic about making a new friend, how important supportive/caring family and friends are, and being honest with yourself. About knowing you have the strength to walk away from what's not right for you or walking towards what is right for you.
Alice Osman does a great job of building up the friendship between Charlie and Nick, as well as creating a truly believable basis for romance. The fear kids face about not fitting in is really accurately depicted in this comic. Thinking about the 10 and 12 year old in my house, I'd feel comfortable with them reading this book even though there is one swear and a few pages that will make them very uncomfortable.
The only real negative is that the pages with longer text messages are hard to read because of the color choice. This is probably me being old! Ha!
haven't read heartstopper in a while but i'm reminded of how cute it is just from volume 1! i might actually read further - they're just so cute together!
5/5 ⭐️
finally got around to reading this and wow! it was sweet and cute but it felt like it was over very quickly... luckily the next one is ready on libby!
Why did I wait so long to read this?! It's freaking adorable, endearing, and filled with the goodness we need more of in the world.
So heartwarming! Nick and Charlie are really cute together. Excited for the next volumes.
Oseman handles so many things in this series in a really thoughtful way. Very healthy relationships and very swoony.
I have good news: My library finally has the first three volumes of Heartstopper in English. (Up until this point, they only had the first four volumes in Spanish.)
Anyway, I've been randomly checking in on this series since I saw season one on Netflix. I do like the fact that things changed from this to the show - and I do like that the show fleshed out some of the supporting cast while at the same time, I love that this comic stays tightly focused on Nick and Charlie.
The first volume covers up until the first kiss and...well, honestly, this might be even cuter than the first couple of episodes of the show. (And they were already so freaking cute.)
I do prefer one thing in the comic vs the show: Nick's friends. I would honestly trade in Imogene for Sai and Christian. I didn't like it in the show how she was really just there to add drama - even though I do like her character and think she is a good one - and while watching the show was desperately wishing that Nick had some guy friends.
Cute! And fast paced. Will definitely pick up the others soon as I can get them at the library.
I loved this so so so much. I love that nick is multitalented and i loved the everything about this. Ive been in a major reading slump and it's exactly what i needed to kick right back into gear ☺️
I don't have much to say on this, other than it was cute. I loved the leads, and I felt like they fit well together, and were adorable! The art style as well was darling, and I look forward to further reading the series.
4.5/5 stars
I was taken aback at how quickly I finished this book. So much so that I sat down and reread it today. Tara, unsurprisingly, ended up being my favorite character. Although I will admit that I felt more attached to these characters while watching the series than when reading the book, this could be because I saw the show first.
