If I had read it growing up I'd give it 5 stars. Haha I've been reading it since March .
Executive Summary: This is my least favorite book the series. Probably closer to 3.5 than 4, but since the series is great, I rounded up.
It's the weakest of the 7 books in my opinion.
Jim Dale Audio book: I did the Jim Dale audio book first. It was good. Dale is an excellent reader and does a descent job with the voices. I wish I had taken better notes on which voices I liked or didn't to compare with the Fry version a bit.
Stephen Fry Audio book: I liked Fry more for this book than I did for the last one. I particularly liked his voices for Dobby and Lockheart. His Snape voice still bothers me, but that's pretty much because I want Alan Rickman's voice.
Which Audio book? I've decided I'm no longer going to try to compare Fry to Dale to determine which is better. Why? It really doesn't matter to me. I think they are both a very good, though very different. I find little value it ranking them. People will have their favorites, but just because you like one over the other doesn't mean the same will apply to everyone. Overall I don't think you can go wrong with either version.

It's a toss up who is more annoying, Dobby the house elf or Professor Lockhart. Neither are unlikable in the way Malfoy and his family are.
I suppose both are supposed to be annoying, but Dobby's scenes are especially tedious. He does redeem himself later in the series however. Moaning Myrtle is a bit annoying as well, but far behind the other 2.
The flying car is a highlight, but that's about it I think. There really aren't any cool additions to the existing lore. It has the weakest antagonist too.
The story has some interesting elements to it, but overall there is just something about this book that has kept it at the bottom of my list on the series.
Maybe it's all the annoying characters, or maybe it's simply a result of the quality of the other books. Still, this like the rest of the series can be a lot of fun is a quick read.
Reading this book as part of a series challenge I'm working on at my blog. I have to drop a few lines about all the books I read to prove that I read them and - honestly - I cannot come up with enough to say about this book to make a full review. In fact, there's really only one thing I've got to say about this book.
I wonder what it says about me when my favorite line from the movie wasn't even in the book. (About the spiders.) Seriously though, I think the spiders were even creepier in the book than they were in the movie. Totally agree with Ron on this one.
Despite the “huh - what?” of Malfoy's choice in surrogates and how just about everything about the house elf still puzzles me and how it sucked to have my favorite character sidelined for most of the story and how Harry really didn't initiate anything... well. Despite that, I think the telling was more enjoyable than in book one.
On to book two I go, we'll see how I feel about this one, my wife says it is better, but I'll make my own decision
Rowling is a great story teller. You can't help but like the main characters and want to know how they are going to make it through the challenges in their story.
I finished book 2 just as Taylor finished book 3 of the Harry Potter series. I don't think that I will ever be able to catch up with her at the rate she is flying through these books.
It is nice to have a little book club right here in our own house, just Father & Daughter.
Just finished the audio book of Harry Potter and the Chamber or Secrets (read by Stephen Fry). That's me caught up to where I stopped the first time around. I enjoyed this one a bit more than I did the first. The ending was rather gripping.
So, bring on The Prisoner of Azkaban!
Okay, here we see the Harry Potter series start to get serious. Harry returns for his second year at Hogwart's, only to find the Heir of Slytherin has plans to open the Chamber of Secrets and bring murder and ethnic cleansing to the school.[return][return]I'd say this is my favourite of the Potter books. Full of intrigue, mystery, and blood, it takes the fairly shiny world we were introduced to in the first book and tussles its hair a bit. Voldemort's character is explored a bit further, and Harry starts to learn more about his past.

L'autrice ebbe l'idea della storia di Harry Potter nel 1990, nel periodo in cui si doveva trasferire a Manchester con il fidanzato, durante un viaggio in treno. Iniziò a scrivere quella sera, anche se ammette che le prime pagine non avevano niente a che fare con l'opera finale. La serie si spalmerà nei sette anni successivi. L'opera, ambientata nell'Inghilterra degli anni novanta, descrive le avventure del giovane mago Harry Potter e dei suoi migliori amici, Ron Weasley ed Hermione Granger. L'ambientazione principale è la Scuola di Magia e Stregoneria di Hogwarts, dove vengono educati i giovani maghi del Regno Unito.
Harry Potter nasce il 31 luglio 1980 a Godric's Hollow da genitori maghi. Rimane orfano all'età di 1 anno e pochi mesi, quando Lord Voldemort fa irruzione nella casa di famiglia dei Potter e uccide i suoi genitori James Potter e Lily Evans, che si sacrificano per salvargli la vita. Grazie all'amore della madre, la maledizione mortale lanciatagli contro da Voldemort rimbalza sulla fronte di Harry lasciandogli una strana cicatrice a forma di saetta e distruggendo Voldemort stesso. Il piccolo Harry viene così affidato agli zii Petunia (sorella di Lily) e Vernon Dursley, i quali però non lo accolgono a braccia aperte: per molti anni lo tratteranno male, negandogli un'infanzia felice. Harry si rende conto che qualcosa di inspiegabile succede attorno a lui e la risposta gli arriverà al suo undicesimo compleanno: lui è un mago, e nel mondo dei maghi (che esiste parallelamente a quello dei “Babbani”) è per giunta molto famoso, perché è l'unico che è riuscito a sopravvivere a Lord Voldemort e all'Anatema che Uccide. Harry è di diritto iscritto dalla nascita ad Hogwarts, la scuola dei maghi, e durante il viaggio per giungervi incontra Ron Weasley, che diventerà il suo più grande amico, e Hermione Granger, un'altra ragazza del primo anno, sua futura migliore amica. Harry Potter è esploso nel 1997 come fenomeno letterario in Inghilterra, nel 1998 il successo attraversa la Manica e si propaga in tutto il mondo. La Warner Bros acquista i diritti per un film e nel novembre 2001 l'omonimo Harry Potter e la pietra filosofale conquista i cinema di tutto il mondo: la serie di film tratti dalla saga saràla più remunerativa della storia di Hollywood. In soli 10 anni (1997-2007), l'intera serie ha venduto circa 450 milioni di copie. I libri sono stati tradotti in 77 lingue, tra cui il latino e il greco antico.
La saga di Harry Potter appartiene sia al genere fantasy che al genere classico del romanzo di formazione. Tuttavia le differenze tra questa serie e altre celebri saghe del genere fantasy sono da rimarcarsi: le storie di Harry Potter non sono ambientate in un'epoca immaginaria o differente dalla nostra: Harry Potter è ambientato nel mondo reale e nei decenni contemporanei (1980-2017); in altre parole, il mondo magico convivrebbe da sempre con quello delle persone comuni, non magiche (che vengono chiamate babbani), ma da esso si nasconderebbe per motivi di sicurezza e di ordine. Non a caso, in Harry Potter si trovano moltissime citazioni, dalla mitologia celtica alla greca, dall'alchimia, allacriptozoologia, e si attinge a piene mani dagli stereotipi classici legati alla concezione magica e fantastica dell'uomo. Tutti questi elementi fanno da cornice alle avventure del protagonista, oppure, a volte con ironia, si piegano al volere della trama.
Un canone classico è la crescita interiore ed emotiva dei protagonisti attraverso le prove più o meno pericolose che il destino ha loro riservato: in Harry Potter i protagonisti non vivranno un'esperienza magica limitata all'infanzia o all'adolescenza per poi tornare nel mondo reale ordinario, ma diverranno adulti nel mondo magico come le persone comuni. Dagli aspetti prettamente adolescenziali come le ribellioni, la fiducia in sé stessi, la curiosità, la scoperta dell'amore, l'impulsività e i relativi errori si passa a elementi molto più maturi come il potere politico, le strumentalizzazioni mediatiche, il razzismo, l'immaturità e le paure degli adulti, l'oppressione del più debole, la vecchiaia e i suoi errori, la depressione e la morte, a detta dell'autrice stessa come tema principale della saga.
La serie è composta da sette libri. Ogni libro della serie rappresenta un anno nella vita di Harry dagli undici ai diciassette anni; i primi sei libri descrivono anche ogni singolo anno scolastico trascorso nella scuola di magia e stregoneria di Hogwarts. Tuttavia, il settimo e conclusivo libro della serie è ambientato nella scuola solo in parte. In ciascuno dei libri l'atmosfera è un po' più cupa rispetto a quello che lo precede e ognuno mostra una maturazione dei protagonisti; dalle atmosfere fantastiche, spensierate e festose del primo libro, si approda, anche attraverso la morte di alcuni personaggi importanti, a quelle cupe, disilluse e a tratti horror degli ultimi libri. Parimenti, lo stile narrativo si evolve con il personaggio diventando via via più complesso, ironico e adulto.
La trama di questo primo romanzo è la seguente: Harry e Ron ritornano ad Hogwarts per il secondo anno di corso sulla Ford Anglia volante della famiglia Weasley ed atterrano su di un albero picchiatore. Non hanno potuto raggiungere il binario 9 e 3/4 a causa di un incantesimo fatto da Dobby, l'elfo domestico della famiglia Malfoy. Dobby forse non aveva tutti i torti. In un lontano passato, Salazar Serpeverde, uno dei fondatori di Hogwarts, era entrato in conflitto con gli altri tre ed aveva creato una Stanza dei segreti che avrebbe potuto essere aperta solamente dall'erede di Serpeverde. Harry, Hermione e Ron scoprono che il loro amico Hagrid in gioventù è stato espulso proprio per aver aperto la camera. Intanto, una maledizione che pietrifica le persone si abbatte sul castello. Harry sente una voce misteriosa che si rivelerà alla fine essere quella del mostro che risiede nella camera dei segreti. Un messaggio viene scritto su un muro e recita: “la camera dei segreti è stata riaperta, temete, nemici dell'erede”. Harry viene considerato il responsabile delle pietrificazioni dopo che in un duello con Draco Malfoy si mette a parlare con un serpente. Hagrid, sospettato di aver riaperto lui la camera dei segreti, viene mandato ad Azkaban. Harry, prima di affrontare e risolvere il mistero della camera dei segreti, dovrà affrontare diversi pericoli tra cui ragni giganti, diari con scritte misteriose, pozioni polisucco e fantasmi piagnucoloni.
Per me, che avevo deciso di intraprendere quest'avventura col maghetto superati abbondantemente i trenta era stato solo uno dei tanti libri in cui mi ero imbattuto nel mio percorso di lettore, dunque non ha accompagnato la mia adolescenza o l'infanzia come invece è successo con le nuove generazioni di lettori. Oltretutto non è stata affatto una scelta dettata dall'estrema popolarità del momento, dal successo, anzi mi ricordo che tutto il clamore suscitato all'inizio mi aveva indotto ad allontanarmi ancor più dai libri della Rowling.
Poi un giorno, così come le scelte che sembrano le più insignificanti ma che diventano le più importanti e complice l'uscita dei primi tre volumi in edizione economica, decisi di prenderli tutti. E leggere Harry Potter è stata un'esperienza inedita e trascinante e non so come l'avrei affrontata se avessi avuto qualche decennio in meno. E' stata una sensazione di riscoperta (anche se non ho mai scoperto nulla), un godimento pieno ed assoluto, una sensazione calda di credere ai maghi e di non essere un Babbano. Harry Potter mi attendeva, semplicemente.
È stata una lettura spensierata, intrapresa a cuor leggero e conclusasi tra tante emozioni: gli eventi narrati sono coinvolgenti, scorrevoli e piacevoli, col tono dei libri per ragazzi, ma strizzando l'occhio a quello degli adulti. Ho trovato tutti i personaggi splendidamente caratterizzati.
Harry Potter è un ottimo libro per ragazzi. Ma è magnificamente anche per adulti che hanno un maghetto rinchiuso dentro di essi e che da anni lotta per uscire; abbandonate ogni preconcetto e pregiudizio verso questa serie.
Non si è mai troppo vecchi per leggere Harry Potter.

I honestly didn't enjoy the last 20 pages or so like the rest of the book. I don't know, they seemed to be written in a too fast paced way, especially the fight with the Basilisk.
Anyway, it's been literally YEARS since I started to ask myself a simple question: Ginny, why do you even exist??
She's so.. Useless and stupid. I know that she's only 11 in this book, but (having previously read all the books) I already know that she doesn't improve at all, so I can't help myself but to despise her right from the very beginning of the series.
Le deuxième tome de la célébrissime saga Harry Potter, qu'on ne présente plus. Je sais que celui-ci a ses détracteurs, mais j'aime beaucoup ce tome, peut-être parce que c'est le premier où la noirceur des derniers tomes commence à faire son apparition, avec ce thème du racisme et de l'intolérance en toile de fond.
I think I found this one inoffensive but relatively dull. Although I have read it in full twice, when I started to read it the third time, I lost interest after a while and abandoned it.
