Interesting premise, atmospheric setting, but poor execution. Too many things left unexplained or shrugged off as “that's just the way it is around here.” Hero and heroine have little opportunity to be more than passive recipients of their destined roles. Heroine pushes the hero away so many times it becomes difficult to understand why he keeps trying (except that, as the Undertaker, it's his role to love the Graveminder). Maybe if there are additional books in the series they will fill out the story and the characters, but I'm not sure I want to take that chance.
