“...if this novel is about anything, it???s about the price that must be paid for the intangible things that not only make life bearable, but worth living in the first place. To quote Taliesin Jaffe???s character Percival de Rolo III from Critical Role Season One: ???Life needs things to live.??? That might seem like a silly statement, but it???s true nevertheless: one can live in the sense that one???s heart continues beating and one???s lungs continue drawing breath, but is it truly living? Can one be considered to be truly alive if one must suffer under oppression, or slavery, or abuse? Is it really ???living??? if all one knows is constant war, or violence? There are other ways to define ???living???, and this novel is about the price that must be paid for those things. Unfortunately, things like peace and hope do not come cheaply, and throughout the course of this novel, but most especially during the climax, readers may find themselves wondering if, at the end of it all, the price is even worth paying, considering how steep it is. Hopefully, the sequels will give a positive, though I predict bittersweet, answer to that question.”
