I really enjoyed this third installment in the Jackaby series. I loved getting to see Jackaby, Abigail, Jenny, and a few more characters again. I absolutely love this world and these characters. Each one of them adds so much to the story.
That being said this book was a little bit of a filler book. We definitely learned a lot and it set up the final installment, but it wasn't as much of a clear case to solve as the first two. The big question that comes up at the beginning of the book is definitely answered, but I definitely have more questions following this book than I normally do with this series. I'm also a little hesitant about how everything can be wrapped up in one final book, but we shall see.
WOW! Yes, there is a bit of a cliffhanger– the ending is coming and I am so excited.
I'm so proud of Jenny. I just have so many feelings for this characters and this amazing world.
While I enjoyed the deep dive into Jenny's backstory in Ghostly Echoes, there was a lot of this book that was just kind of a hot mess. The last third had me staring at my Kindle going, “what just happened?” The action scenes were sadly vague and not nearly clear enough to follow properly. This book has a lot going for it – Jenny is a fantastic character and learning more about her and what happened in her past was absolutely worth the read, but the end was just...not good. Confusing at best, flat out impossible to follow at worst.
The stakes rose a lot in this book, and I'm not sure that really works for the world set up in these novels. I'll absolutely still read the next one, but I'm going into it not expecting a whole lot, which is sad. I really enjoyed the first two, but this one was a big step down.
