Get Jiro!

Nabije toekomst, Los Angeles. Alles draait rond voedsel, in een soort natte droom van Anthony Bourdain: chefs zijn almachtig, er worden moorden gepleegd voor een reservatie, en twee clans restauranthouders vechten om de overmacht in de stad. Aan de ene kant Rose's Vertical Farm, met lokaal-voedsel-hipster-veganismen en gelijkaardige, aan de andere kant Bob's Internationalists, megacorporatie, maar dan klassiek culinair en op zeer hoog niveau.

In het midden: Jiro, vers toegekomen, sushi-chef.

Die door beide kanten ingepalmd wil worden, maar daar het zijne over denkt, en ze uiteindelijk tegen mekaar opzet.

Veel voedsel (prachtig mooi getekend ook), veel bloed en geweld, een beetje humor.

Gho ja. Leutig, maar niet meer dan dat. Om echte satire te zijn, heeft het wat meer tanden nodig dan een chef die iemand onthoofd omdat hij zijn sushi met de rijst in de soyasaus-met-wasabi sopt. En ik heb graag wat meer verhaal in mijn comics. En wat meer dimensie in mijn personages.

I read the sequel first which I liked a lot better (comparatively).

This reminded me of a cooking game I've played with my husband set in a dystopian future; one of the levels you're a good truck prepping meals and get in a driveby.

Chefsploitation! Pulpy samurai mashup that lets Bourdain thumb his nose at pretentious foodie douches and holier than thou vegan/freegan/locavore hippies.

Fine food becomes the currency of the wealthy and chefs are the new kingpins. The poor live off in the periphery and indulge in pre-packaged fare and franchised McRestaurants - stuffing their fat faces with processed pablum.

Langon Foss' art is pitch perfect and he fills each panel with tons of wonderful detail. Meanwhile Bourdain can't help but drop some knowledge, from the Moguro Bocho, Hinoki wood, elvers (which even today can cost 1K per pound), to the ritual of the ortolan.

Nonetheless, here in landlocked Waterloo - I'm still dunking my sushi in soy sauce.
