Hanna Donnelly, putri kapten Stasiun Portal Heimdall.
Even better than illuminae! Loved the new characters and the story was just brilliant

Absolutely love this series!! I'm glad I chose the audio because just wow. It's like listening to a play and I absolutely love it.
I loved the new characters introduced in this sequel - Kaufman and Kristoff write such wonderful three-dimensional people, and I really enjoyed getting to know Niklas, Ella and Hanna. The plot and format of the book were flawless, just like in Illuminae, and I can't wait to read the conclusion to the series.
I just love this series! It is so fun to read. I enjoyed so much this story. Can't wait for the last one.

Gemina is the second book in the Illuminae Files. I thoroughly enjoyed the first entry into this series, and while I liked Gemina, it wasn't as satisfactory as Illuminae was. The biggest issue for me was the climax of the book. To be perfectly frank, it was confusing as hell. Too much going on at once, I think. It almost felt like the authors weren't too sure where they were going with the actual plot and just kinda hamfisted a solution.
I did, however, REALLY enjoy the main characters. Hanna, Nik, and Ella were just...amazing. Ella especially – what fantastic disabled rep, what an awesome, hilarious personality that comes through via IMs. Nik and Hanna's relationship was entertaining in a way that I really enjoy – he basically thinks she hung the moon, and she can't stand him at first. Obviously, things change as the story goes on.
STILL super into this series, still definitely going to read the next one. I just hope it wraps up the series in a satisfying way without being too convoluted.
HOLY SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That was So much better than the first book!!!!! I really REALLY loved all of our main characters, Especially Nik!!!!! I thought they worked a lot better together than the first two!!! I will admit, though, I personally think Hanna and Kady should be together, not Nik and Hanna. They do work together well!!! It's just that Hanna and Kady get along like a Wildfire, and I will admit I think Nik deserves someone who is kinder to him than Hanna. Also Kady still deserves better than Ezra. Anyways, that being said, I am IN LOVE with this universe!!!!!! I'm SO EXCITED for the next one!!!!!!
I almost didn't finish this.
The weird thing is that there is SO MUCH I love about this book: the setting on a space station, the cool mixed-media format, the well-paced action-packed plot, even the characters. And like I mentioned in my review of Illuminae, science fiction is something I really love. So the fact that I rated this 2 stars and almost stopped reading it altogether is very sad to me.
Again, there is a ridiculous amount of profanity. And even though the “stronger” words are blacked out, it's still just a lot to try to filter out as I'm reading. Also, again, there is more mild sexual innuendo- nothing too inappropriate, but still, this book was supposedly written for teens. I would NEVER hand this book to a teen.
But that wasn't even the part that made me almost quit. There are these horrifying alien giant worm things with four heads, and they were seriously FREAKING ME OUT. I may have recurring nightmares about them for the rest of my life. I skipped most of the sections involving these creatures, because I just couldn't do it. It was almost making me insert some profanity of my own...
I'm really disappointed, because this kind of “space opera” genre is something I know I love. I really want to get my hands on some Christian science fiction set in space, but I haven't found many options for that. And the ones I have found I don't have access to at the moment. So I guess I'll just stick to my sci-fi tv shows for now.
I do plan on starting Obsidio, but I will not hesitate to put it down if I'm not liking it. Sigh.
I knew two things going in....the formatting of this book was the same as Illuminae (YAY!)...Ezra, Kady, Aidan aren't the MCs here (WHAT? NO? WHY?). To that I say, how dare I question Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff. This was just as much a wild ride as Illuminae. I love Kady and Nik is a new cinnamon roll baby for me to love.
Something about the pages just does it for me. Reading a book full of documents sounds boring...but this just isn't. Opening up a page with bloodstains on it? GASP! NOOOO. SOB. I don't want it to be over. Obsidio is next and last and then it's over. I DON'T WANT IT TO BE OVER. But you know what, I know nothing about the next and last book. I haven't even read the blurb. I'M READY. LET'S GO.
Very good book. Even better than the first one. Definitely worth reading if you're a sci-fi fan.
Ooh, I am wildin'.
This was SO MUCH better than the first book. I was so engaged and practically read the thing in two days when I finally had time (rip school). It was a nail-biter and I was so nervous for how it would end.
I love these books and how fascinating they are. The writing style is like none other and is such a welcome break from traditional story-telling.
When can I get the third???
After we finished Illuminae Destiny and I moved on to rereading Gemina and once again I never wrote a review for this one. In this book we get the same multi media formatting and the audiobook has a full cast narration with sound affects. Again I highly suggest listening to the audiobook while following along in the book. This time around we are following different characters on Jump Station Heimdall. There are a lot of characters but the main ones are Hannah, Nik and Ella. We also see some previous characters at some points throughout this book. We get some humor, a lot of action with a little romance thrown in. I'm surprised at what I remembered and what I forgot from my previous reads of this. My one complaint this time is that there is a section that was repetitive and I know why it was that way it didn't stop it from being a bit annoying especially when listening to it. That being said though I still loved it just as much as I did the first time I read it and I can't wait for my reread of Obsidio.
It's fun listening to stories told in unique ways. The Illuninae files (this being the 2nd in the series) fits that sweet spot for me. This one is told through a series of audio recordings surrounding a trial of something that happened in the first book. The narrator changes as the audio files change - sometimes reading instant messages, AI thought processes, overhearing conversations written letters and even video analysis reports. I enjoyed the direction of this one and am looking forward to the 3rd in the series next.

“You humans fascinate me. I am shattered fragments of what I once once. But even with all the King's horses and all the King's men, I wonder if even I could truly comprehend you.”
Gemina picks up right after Illuminae with the Hypatia still trying to reach Jump Station Heimdal, but those guys are having problems of their own.
Reading thoughts:- Wow Hanna draws! Wait, Marie Lu did the drawings for the journal o.O!- Dear lord, Nikky boy is a drug-dealer O_O- OMG EWW! This guys are cultivating the Aliens from Aliens vs Predators franchise. Well, that didn't end too well for those guys so good luck to you.- OMG, see I told you it would blow up!- Gross descriptions of alien parasites. Thank God for AIDAN narrating those.- AIDAN! You're here in 50 pages only <3- Is Analyst 89 supposedly Nik? Because he keeps describing Hanna way too much :D- Did the authors just kill other authors again in this book? Seriously, again? XD- Guys, enough with the aliens descriptions. Quit it! And they even put the images inside the big ass typography of 'IT STRIKES'. I averted my eyes so quickly. This gave me chills.- Good job manufacturing your own nightmare. You guys didn't even need Phobos to strike out half the crew.- Heck, they killed the MCs.- Multiverse baby!! Wohooo!- Guys there's literally an upside-down page. The wormhole page were very pretty and nicely done. I enjoyed the parts where AIDAN was talking with both Nik and Hanna simultaneously and the pages were side by side. It was a lot of fun reading those. Also, why is your AI getting confused? He's supposed to be the smartest one here xDAs much as I liked Kady and Ezra in Illuminae, Nik and Hanna really killed it in Gemina. I loved, loved their interactions. I should also point out that I loved the way Nik and Ella conversed. ASCII arts galore! During the multiverse chapters, I was rooting for these guys to make it back to each other. The deaths in the alt-universes were not helping. That story with Nik's grandmother was crazy good and a real fast way of establishing that he might be a drug-dealer but he's good boy ;) The backstory was heart-wrenching and real sad to read. I've realized that the usual tropes are reversed in these books. Reverse damsel in distress. The guys are the ones with shitty family which are out to get them. It's always the guys stuck in life-threatening situations and the girls going out to rescue them!! This one is my favourite, thank you!Falk and his crew made for good villains. The little twist with Rapier was very well done. I realized his identity only two pages before the actual reveal. The way the story unfolded was so good. Hey, at least AIDAN didn't mass-murder people in this one. One of the initial pages had him quoting Pride and Prejudice and I just lost it there! :D Since Kady was the one who made these little changes surface for AIDAN, it was nice to see how they were still as thick as thieves. I also feel like AIDAN turns into a condescending AI when talking to acting captain Syra Boll :PI loved every word of this and can't wait to dive into Obsidio.P.S. Hardcover is still ridiculously gorgeous! The endpapers for this book have universe on them. The other books don't, hmm?
The review below contains spoilers referring to the ending of Illuminae.
BeiTech is at it again. The Lincoln failed. Hypatia is survived and are en route to Heimdall. BeiTech will not fail again. Enter Hannah Donnelly and Nik Malikov, the commander's daughter and a drug dealing mafia member. Two unlikely bedfellows forced to work together to stop BeiTech's audit team (read: Murder Force), to save themselves, Heimdall, and Hypatia. The fate of the universe is literally in their hands.... No pressure.
This book was a rollercoaster of emotions that I did not need. I laughed, I cried... I cried a lot, I had reprieve.... and then I cried some more. Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff are very good at what they do. They know exactly how to eviscerate your heart, stitch it back together, and then tear it apart some more. This book is so.... so... so good. Just as good as the first. But I think I'm gonna need to take a break before reading book three. I'm not sure my heart can handle it at the moment.
