Franny and Zooey

Many people name Holden Caulfield when they discuss their favorite Salinger character, and likewise Catcher in the Rye when discussing their favorite Salinger book.

I'm inclined to say Zooey Glass and Franny & Zooey, myself.

This was the first Salinger book I'd picked up in years – after having a less-than-pleasant experience with Catcher in the Rye in high school (there's nothing quite like a terrible lit teacher to thoroughly decimate any enthusiasm for a great book). I'm glad I picked it up. I devoured this book. I adored this book. I ate this book up like it was the only book left on the planet and I slowed down near the end because I didn't want it to end. When I finished it I started over and read it again.

This book is brilliant. I'd be willing to bet that even people who consider Salinger one of their least favorite authors would like this book.

WHY IS ZOOEY SO FUNNY BRUHHH😭😭 This bastard could just get away with anything with his annoyingly witty takes. Forever in love with the bathroom conversation between him and Bessie. The humour was gold.

Wow - I don't think I've ever read a more elaborate way of saying “I love you, and I see you.” than in Zooey.
Franny was a blast as well, but undoubtedly these two stories have to read together to gain their full effect.
It makes me want to reread Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? because it has the same cadence in the writing style. This is my first time reading Salinger (though not my first attempt–I tried Catcher in the Rye a long time ago and still do not want to attempt to try again) and it was good, really good. Made my head hurt but only in so much as stories without breaks and long, descriptive, overly-wrought sentences are wont to do. (Reminds me of Yanigahara. Who's writing style in A Little Life, incidentally, I loved too.)
These were real people to me. I wasn't watching a movie in my head, these people existed. Their monologues were unbearably long but unavoidably captivating and I could not, for the life of me, blink when I was reading them because they were talking so fast.

The best ever

Salinger's narratives make you one of their own - they pull you closer and then push you away; the inherent ambivalence of the characters is what makes it so raw and real. he manages to delicately put inexplainable feelings into words; feelings you thought you were the only one that felt, feelings that feel so personal, idiosyncratic, and nuanced, but Salinger exposes them, in a paradoxically subtle way.

ধর্মীয় উপদেশ-এর গল্প মানুষ হুনবার চায় না; লোকজনেরে জোর কইরা নিজের ধর্মবিশ্বাসের দিকে টাননের লিগা তাই অনেক রকম ফন্দি ফিকির করতে হয়। আমরা কাশেম বিন আবুবাকার-এর বইতে দেখি, নায়ক-নায়িকা একজন অপরজনের কাছে আসবার চায়, হাত ধরবার চায়, চুমা খাইবার চায়... কিন্তু ধর্মে বাধা আছে বইলা বিয়ার আগে কিছুই করে না তারা, শুধু মুখ লুকায়া উল্টা দিকে দৌড় লাগায়...প্রেমের গল্পের উছিলায় কাশেম সাহেব আমাগোরে ছবক দেন, “বিয়ার আগে চুমা খায়ো না বাবারা”। গল্পের উছিলায় ধর্মের কথা শুনানোর এই ঘটনা তো আমরা আজকে থিকা দেখতেছি না; স্বয়ং যীশু এইভাবে নানান বানানো গল্প বইলা ঈশ্বরের বাণী প্রচার করছেন, যেইগুলারে আমরা আজকা ‘প্যারাবল' বইলা জানি। উনারও ম্যালা আগে ঈশপের গল্পে আমরা নৈতিকতা, ভালো/ খারাপের শিক্ষা পাইছি। ঈশপের রাখাল বালক, কাছিম আর খরগোশ, কিপ্টা লোক আর তার সোনার টেগা...এইসব গল্প আমরা সবাই-ই কমবেশী জানি। বরং বাইবেলের এক দুইটা প্যারাবল এইখানে চিকা মাইরা রাখি। বাইবেল সত্য হইলে, কে জানে, এই উছিলায় কোনদিকে আমার কোন দরজা খুইলা যায়...আফটার অল, গড ওয়ার্কেথ ইন মিস্টিরিয়াস ওয়েইস

এই প্যারাবলটা নবী নেইথান (Nathan) আর নবী ডেভিডের-যাঁরে আমরা ‘যবুর'-এর লেখক দাউদ (আঃ) বইলা জানি; নেইথান ডেভিডরে শিক্ষা দেওনের লিগা এই গল্পটা বলেন। গল্পটা হইলো এইরকমঃ এক ছিলো ধনী খামারি, তার আছিলো ম্যালা ম্যালা গবাধি পশু। তার কয়েক বাড়ী পাশে আছিলো আরেক গরীব খামারি, যার সম্পদ বলতে আছে খালি একটাই মাদী ভেড়া; সে কঠিন কষ্ট কইরা চলে, খায়া না খায়া দিন পার করে, কিন্তু তবুও তার আদরের ভেড়ীটারে সে জবাই কইরা খায়া ফ্যালে না। বড়লোক খামারি সিস্টেমে গরীব খামারির ভেড়ীটারে ভাগায়া নিয়া কাইটা কুইটা তার গেস্টগোরে খাবায়া দেয় (বড়লোক খামারি হইলে সবাই যা করে আর কী...)। ডেভিড নবী আছিলেন বটে, পাশাপাশি সাইড ব্যবসা হিসাবে রাজার কামও করতেন। উনার আন্ডারে কাম করা এক সৈনিক উরাইয়াহ (Uriah)-এর বউয়ের লগে উনি (view spoiler)[ঝক্রেউবফববফফঊট্ব্যাও (hide spoiler)] কইরা ফালান। বড়লোক খামারির গল্প কয়া নেইথান আসলে ডেভিডরে মনে মনে একটা চোপাড় মারছেন। এই গল্প থিকা আমরাও শিক্ষা পাই, ঘরে বউ থাকলে, নিজের অধীনে কাম করা কর্মচারীর বউয়ের লগে (view spoiler)[মক্সকচদ্বযগদসদ্সগ (hide spoiler)] করা উচিৎ না। নবী কিছিমের লোকজনের ব্যাপারে কথা কওয়া বিপজ্জনক, তাই রেফারেন্স, তথ্যসূত্র এইসব দেওয়া জরুলী। নেইথান আর ডেভিডের এই গল্প পাইবেন ওল্ড টেস্টামেন্টের 'স্যামুয়েল' পর্বের ২য় ভাগের ১২ নাম্বার আয়াতে।

সেকেন্ড এই প্যারাবলটা নিউ টেস্টামেন্ট থিকা ম্যাথিউ সাহেবের মারফৎ আমরা পাইছিঃ এক বিয়ার অনুষ্ঠানে জামাই বউরে বরন কইরা নেয়ার দায়িত্ব পড়ছে দশটা কুমারী মাইয়ার উপরে (তারা আদৌ কুমারী কি না, এবং কুমারী মাইয়াই কেন এই কামের লিগা দরকার-এইসব প্রশ্ন কইরা বিব্রত কইরেন না, নিজেও বিব্রত হয়েন না)। কিন্তু রাইত পার হয়া যায়, জামাই আহে না, আহে না, আহে না...অপেক্ষা করতে করতে দশ মাইয়াই ঘুমায়া যায়। তারা যখন গভীর ঘুমে, তখন আঁৎকা জামাই আয়া পড়ে বিয়ার মঞ্চে। তখন বাইর হয় ঐ দশ মাইয়ার পাঁচজন বুঝদার জ্ঞানী, আর বাকী পাঁচজন বেকুব। কারণ, জামাই বউরে বরন কইরা নেয়ার লিগা যেই কুপি বাতি নিয়া আসছিলো এরা দশজনে, তাগো মইধ্যে বুরবাক পাঁচজন তাগো কুপিতে ত্যাল ভরে নাই, জ্ঞানী পাঁচজনে ভরছে। এই গল্প দিয়া যীশুর বন্ধু ম্যাথিউ সাহেব বুঝাইছেন যীশু যখন আইবেন, তখন আপনে ঘুমে থাকলেও আপনের কুপিতে যেন ত্যাল ভইরা রেডী থাকেন।

আগের গল্পে 'ভেড়ী' মানে যেরকম ‘পরের বউ', এই গল্পের 'ত্যাল' মানে কিন্তু ঈশ্বরভীতি, যীশুপ্রেম এইসব। হ্যারি পটারের ভবিষ্যদ্বাণী কোর্সের মাষ্টারনি মিস ট্রেলনি যেইরকম কাপের নিচে চায়ের পাতি দেইখা ঘটনা আন্দাজ করা পারেন, এইসব প্যারাবল-এর বিভিন্ন উপমা থেইকা আপনেরেও একইভাবে মূল ভাব আন্দাজ কইরা নিতে হবে। বুদ্ধিমানের লিগা তো ইশারাই...

আদালতে সাক্ষ্য নেয়ার সময় একটা আইন গোটা দুনিয়ায় মানে, সেইটা হইলো আপনে ‘হিয়ারসে' করবার পারবেন না। মানে হইলো, কাঠগড়ায় খাড়ায়া আপনে কইতে পারবেন না, “আমি শুনছি অমুক এই কথাটা বলছে”। আপনে যদি নিজের কানে কথাটা শুইনা থাকেন তাইলেই আপনের সাক্ষ্য গ্রহণযোগ্য হবে। ধর্মের আইন মানুষের বানানো আইনের উপরে চলে বইলা ধর্মে এই হিয়ারসে ব্যাপারটা আবার জায়েজ আছে ; “আমি অমুকের চাচা তমুকের কাছ থিকা শুনছিলাম এই কাহিনী, যিনি আবার এইটা শুনছেন চমুকের বয়ানে, চমুক এই কাহিনী জানেন, কারণ ঘটনাটা ঘটছিলো উনার প্রতিবেশীর তালতো ভাইয়ের বারান্দায়...” -এইধরণের বয়ানেই ধর্মীয় গল্পগুলা আমাদের কাছে আসে। ধর্মের বিশ্বাস থিকা আমরা জানি, এই বয়ান যাগো হাত ধইরা আসছে, এনারা সব্বাই খাঁটি সোনার মানুষ, তাগোর ভিত্রে কোন ভেজাল নাই, নিজে নিজে বানায়া গল্প কইবো, এইরকম মানুষই তাঁরা না(!) আমাগো বিশ্বাসের খুঁটি ইস্পাতের মতো পোক্ত বইলাই অরিজিনাল বই প্রকাশের কয়েক হাজার বছর পরে এখনো তাই গল্প প্রচারের পারপাসে প্যারাবল-ই সবচায়া ভালো উপায়।

প্যারাবল নিয়া এতো প্যানপ্যানানির কারণ হইলো, আলোচ্য বই, এই 'ফ্র্যানি অ্যান্ড জুই' আসলে একটা আধুনিক প্যারাবল। এইখানে লেখক চরিত্রগুলানরে দিয়া ম্যালা ম্যালা ইতং বিতং বেফায়দা কথা কওয়ায়া পৃষ্ঠার পর পৃষ্ঠার পর পৃষ্ঠা নষ্ট করছেন, যেই কারণে ২০০ পাতার বইরেও এক পর্যায়ে গন্ধমাদন পর্বতের মতোন ভারী মনে হইতে থাকে। যাউক, অনেক প্যাঁচ দেওনের পরে ফাইনালি স্যালিঞ্জার সাহেব রিভিল করছেন এই বই লেখনের উদ্দেশ্যঃ আপনে যখন যেইখানে যা-ই করেন, মনে মনে সারাক্ষণ জপতে থাকবেন, "যীশু আমারে ক্ষমা করো, যীশু আমারে ক্ষমা করো"। এইটা জপতে জপতে এমুন পর্যায়ে নিয়া যাইবেন যে আপনের দিলের ভিতরে অটোমেটিক এই জপুনি চলতে থাকবো। আপনে হয়তো ব্যাংক ডাকাইতি করতেছেন, কিংবা কোন মেয়ের ওড়না ধইরা টান দিতেছেন, তখনও যেন আপনের কলব যীশুর কাছে মাফ চাইতেই থাকে।

ধর্মীয় শিক্ষার এই ব্যাপারটাই ভয়ংকর। ধর্ম পয়লাই আমাগোরে শিখাইয়া দেয় আমার দলে যারা নাই, তারা সব বুরবাক। এর উপরে ডাকাইতি করনের টাইমেও যদি তসবি গুননের বুদ্ধি দেয়, তাইলে আপনে তারে আদালতে আর লইবেন ক্যামনে? আমরা তো শতাব্দীর পর শতাব্দী ধইরা দেখতেই আছি, চোর, ডাকাইত, বাটপার, ধর্ষকেরা তাগো কুকর্ম সাধনের পরে নদীতে ডুব দিয়া, নাইলে পাত্থরে চুমা খায়া, নাইলে কপালে ত্যালের ক্রুশ আঁইকা, নাইলে দেয়ালে মাথা ঠুইকা (মানে যার কিতাবে মাফ চাওনের রেসিপি যেইটা আর কী) সব পাপের ইতিহাস ডিলিট কইরা ফালান, মনে মনে জপেন, "আমি দুই চাইর পাঁচ দশটা রেপ করছি ঠিক আছে, কিন্তু আমি তো বিশ্বাসী! আমারে উনি ঠিকি মাপ কইরা দিবেন"।

'ফ্র্যানি অ্যান্ড জুই'-বইটা খুবই আমেরিকান; আমেরিকান কেরেস্তান ছাড়া বহির্বিশ্বের আর কেউ এই বইয়ের সাথে সেইভাবে সম্পর্ক মনে হয় স্থাপন করতে পারবেন না। আমেরিকান কেরেস্তান-ই হওয়া দরকার, কারণ, বাকী খ্রীষ্টান বিশ্বের সাথে আমেরিকান খ্রীষ্টান বিশ্বাসের কিছু পার্থক্য আছে। আমেরিকা বাদ দিলে বাকী কেরেস্তান বিশ্ব মোটা দাগে মোটামুটি ক্যাথলিক; আমেরিকা প্রটেস্ট্যান্ট (মোটা দাগে, মাইন্ড ইট)। আবহাওয়া, জায়গার অবস্থান, সংস্কৃতি, ভূগোল-এইসবের সাথে সেই অঞ্চলের ঈশ্বরের স্বভাব চরিত্রের আনুপাতিক সম্পর্ক। ক্যাথলিক বিশ্ব আমেরিকার তুলনায় গরীব, তাগোর ঈশ্বরও তাই কথায় কথায় প্রজাগোরে শূলে চড়াইবার চান, কারণ গরীবের মনে মহব্বত, প্রেম-ভালোবাসা কম, আমরা জানি; প্রটেস্ট্যান্ট ধনী আমেরিকার ঈশ্বররে সেই তুলনায় অনেক বেশী দিলখোলা, নেভার-মাইন্ড টাইপের লোক মনে হয়, যিনি ক্যাপিটালিস্টগো দিকে চোখ টিপ মাইরা মেসেজ পাঠাইতেই থাকেন, "যা করতাছ, করতে থাকো, আমি তো আছিই লগে, নাকি?"

প্যারাবল প্রচারের যেই সিস্টেম, এরে ওরে রেফারেন্স ধইরা ঘটনার সত্যতা নিশ্চিত করা, সেটা এইখানেও আছে। স্যালিঞ্জার সংলাপ ভালো লেখেন। প্যারাবল কওয়ার লিগা এই গুণটার দরকার আছে। স্যালিঞ্জার নিজেও নিশ্চয়ই উনার এই ক্ষমতার ব্যাপারে জানতেন, এই কারণেই আমেরিকান যীশু হওনের খায়েশ উনার মাথায় চাপছিলো। ২ তারা দেয়া গেলো ওই সংলাপের বরাতেই। বইটা ক্ষীণকায়, তবুও তাকে একটা বইয়ের জায়গা খায়া দেয়।

Non credevo che io e Salinger potessimo diventare amici, invece è successo. In realtà è stato molto più di questo, ma procediamo con ordine.

Ho sempre associato Salinger a “Il giovane Holden”, libro per il quale nutro tuttora una specie di repulsione senza che io sappia spiegarne il motivo. Forse, l'ho sentito nominare talmente tante volte che solo il titolo mi dà la nausea.
Queste, dunque, le premesse.

Sta di fatto che qualche tempo fa @mariannemme mi regala questo libriccino, dicendomi: “Lo amerai”.
Io, molto perplessa, sono indecisa se ricordarle dei bruciori che avverto allo stomaco quando sento parlare di Salinger -sono certa che ne abbiamo parlato, Mary, ricordi?- ma alla fine sto zitta perché fondamentalmente mi fido di lei.
Tuttavia, il libro rimane per lungo tempo a prendere polvere su una mensola della libreria fino a che non leggo, un mese fa, la recensione di @ale.biblion. Ho una sorta di folgorazione, corro a disseppellire “Franny e Zooey” e lo appoggio in cima alla pila sul comodino.

Niente, amici, mi sono innamorata davvero. Della penna di Salinger, del suo essere sorprendentemente divertente, della sua capacità di descrivere la luce e il modo in cui questa, facendo irruzione in una stanza, modella cose e persone -e tu, lettore, le vedi davanti agli occhi quelle scene-, dei dialoghi -le parole che usa, la veemenza che riesce ad imprimere a certi passaggi-, dei personaggi che bucano la pagina -o meglio, sei tu che entri dentro alla storia, osservi e ascolti affascinato e preghi che esistano persone così nella vita reale.
Devo continuare? Facciamo che mi limito a lasciarvi un piccolo assaggio.

Could not get into this at all. I tried. I really did.

I don't think Salinger's style is for me. Overall, the writing felt extremely pretentious. Our book club discussion put it into words for me. Salinger doesn't seem to care about the reader at all, and I don't particularly appreciate that.

Overall the book was both really bad and somewhat interesting. It's hard to bring those two things together. I like the discussion that's going on between the lines, but I'm ultimately not interested in religion or spirituality in the slightest. I honestly enjoyed the articles I read and videos I watched about this book more than the book itself.

Zooey was a thoroughly detestable character. He was disgusting toward his mother, and he seems like one of those guys who loves to hear himself talk and believes he's always right. He needs to expand his vocabulary beyond the words ‘buddy' and ‘my God.'

Franny ultimately surprised me. I really identified with her a few times. I didn't think I would. Overall I don't really understand her desire to do the whole Jesus Prayer thing, but I'm going to share a few quotes from her that made me say, “Girl, I feel you.”

“I actually reached a point where I said to myself, right out loud, like a lunatic, If I hear just one more, picky, cavilling, unconstructive word out of you, Franny Glass, you and I are finished - but finished.” (Page 143-4)

“And the worst part was, I knew what a bore I was being, I knew how I was depressing people, or even hurting their feelings - but I just couldn't stop! I just could not stop picking.” (Page 145)

“Just because I'm choosy about what I want - in this case, enlightenment, or peace, instead of money or prestige or fame or any of those things - doesn't mean I'm not as egotistical and self-seeking as everybody else.” (Page 148)

Good, but not really my cup of tea. I'm sure others will enjoy it far more than I did. I was annoyed by the over-use of the expression, “for God's sake.”

Overall, I wasn't really drawn into this book. It's engaging in small doses, but otherwise, it can get rather rambling. Good thing it is only 100+ pages long.

Pretty good, real easy read, focusing on one little moment in an Ivy-League-dropout brother and sister's lives.
