Definitely, the most unique book I've read this year. A dark feminist retelling of Macbeth and I loved the concept.
Sadly, the writing style wasn't for me. It constantly pulled me out of the story and it affected my enjoyment.
I was really excited for this one - I've always loved Lady Macbeth and this sort of Heathers/Shakespeare mashup seemed appealing. The writing style is interesting and poetic, however a lot of the attempts to make the story fit into the play's framework are pretty weak, and the fact that the whole thing takes place over a two week period is EXTREMELY silly considering that she hadn't known any of them before that. I get why she couldn't have known Mack before considering the twist at the end but the idea that this dude was so in love with her that he was ready to kill and die for her after like 29 hours is ridiculous.
I also found a lot of the writing around the assault on Jade and its aftermath to be really dismissive of survivors and the ability to have a life after something like that happens. Like she was going to die either way and her choice was just whether to fade or flame out, and that's not true. For a book with the kind of dedication this one has to girls who want revenge, it feels irresponsible.

All of the opinions presented below are my own.She looks at the bruises on my neck and the scratches across my face, but she doesn't say anything. So I point at my hair, and I say, This color. Know what it's called? She shakes her head: No.I say, REVENGE.She says, Good girl. Kill him. This is the revenge story I've been dreaming about for ages and it was great. Apparently a Macbeth retelling (I am wholly unfamiliar with Macbeth), this was bloody as hell and pulled no punches. While ultimately an enjoyable read, both Jade and her coven were so cold and heartless that nothing about this felt realistic. Occasionally it felt a little repetitive and there were points where I just wanted to see where things would go. So while I would recommend this and am glad I read it, I'd also say it's not necessarily a perfect read.Blog Twitter Instagram Facebook
