It took me a long time to read For My Lady's Heart, and with good reason. The whole novel is written very much like a Medieval story – the original version even uses Middle English when characters are speaking. I, however, switched about 15% of the way through, to the updated, easier to read version. This book is NOT easy to read, but it IS enjoyable. It reminded me a lot of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales and of King Arthur. Mostly because of the setting.
If you have any knowledge of the Medieval era, it will help you greatly to understand what's going on in this novel. If you aren't familiar at all with that time period, I imagine that you'll be lost. There is a glossary at the end of the book, filled with unfamiliar terms, but still. This book is a lot to take on just for fun.
Ruadrik is a HELLUVA leading man. Seriously, think the ultimate knight, with the ultimate berserker energy when it comes to fights. Melanthe is...frustrating as a leading lady. She has good reasons for acting as she does, but damn did I want to shake her more than once. She's arrogant and haughty and at the same time, totally in love with Ruck.
Am I glad I read this book? Yeah, it's always nice to challenge oneself. Will I read it again? Hmm. Probably not for a very long time, but I do recommend it.
