One of the worst books I've ever read. Switched to the audio book and still could barely get through it.
Not my thing. Not my thing. Not my thing. I couldn't even finish it. I made it to chapter 9 and was like nope. I'll look up the sketchy bits online for my project because there is no way I want to finish consuming this. I'm already scarred and I didn't even reach the “BDSM” scenes
I WANT MY BRAIN CELLS BACK. This book . . . I can't even . . . it's SHEER MINDFUCK. Like, when I read:“Okay, and what do I get out of this?”He shrugs and looks almost apologetic.“Me,” he says simply.” And this turns women on. MY INNOCENCE. I'm only...I'm sixteen. I shouldn't have read this. No, sir. Just . . . no. My faith in Erotica has been destroyed forever. Oh, Christian Fifty Shades of I Don't Have A Bad Enough Word For You Grey. You know what? It doesn't matter if you're sexy and enigmatic enough to have slept with 20 willing women. It doesn't matter if you're so filthy rich your (apparently prodigious) dick is made of pure gold. YOU DON'T MAKE ME HOT, YOU SICK FUCK. As you can see, these two piss me off. Christian and Anastasia are Edward and Bella all over again. You know, the “He's a prick but she doesn't deserve even him” thing S. Meyer had going. Copied to perfection.P.S Someone just told me this is a fan fiction of Twilight. So that's why. I should have known.I kept screaming at her to WAKE THE FUCK UP. The relief I felt when she finally ran was . . . it was beyond words.I don't have a problem with the sex. I'm not going to run away screaming just because it has S&M. But this was supposed to be erotic. Only, the thing is, it's not. It was just raw sex. Not arousing. I'm a feminist, but I can admit that the idea of giving in makes me hotter than the idea of being a dominatrix all decked out in leather. So I can relate to Ana there, although I don't really want the Fifty Shades of Grey submission fantasy some of you go for.But the rest?“Oh, My.” “Inner goddess.”“You could still run for the hills. Come, I want to show you my playroom.” “He reaches between my legs and pulls on the blue string...what! And...gently pulls my tampon out and tosses it into the nearby toilet.”“Never trust a man who can dance. “And lastly, (sorry if I missed any), but why is there such parody galore of this travesty of a book? the way i anticipated this book because it was for the first time i realized i can read smut on printed paper but also because my ex's ex was grossly into it and I wanted to know what's it about.
this is the worst type of love story you can think of. in more or less words, what the book is suggesting is that a woman can change the man and shape him into what she wants him to be which is bullshit. no man ever changes unless he wants to. even though the revelation happened in the second book but christian grey was damaged, broken and needed healing and love. I found Ana to be ridiculously stupid at moments, but her constant crying about wanting to change Christian was getting annoying.
I liked the book from his point of view as it had made more sense.
I couldn't get past the terrible writing style, especially when it came to the erotic parts.
aweful, dreadful writing and the story.. what story, what plot? No character development whatsoever, the same words and words are used over and over again. Some inner goddess in a virgin?! and so so many WTF moment, so hyper unreal, while trying to be real. How is it this book is so popular?
DNF at 20%
I tried. I really did. Everyone raves about this. “Oh, it's my guilty pleasure!” Thought “maybe it'll be mine,” since I do like kinda freaky stuff. But...alright. Yeah, no. Didn't do it for me. The characters were SO cliche and tried and I cringed until I gave up.
So many things wrong with this book. The plot was silly, the characters: Anna is a naiive girl who has no self preservation. Grey is a creepy guy that any normal girl should have run away from–a contract to have sex with him? seriously? Because I don't want to spoil it for any who may want to read it, I have to warn virgins who will read this book that it does NOT accurately depict a first time for a girl who has never masturbated and is having sex with a man of “considerable length”. The only pro about this book is that the author is able to create detailed imagery when it comes to her sex scenes, but that's the only place. Not mommy porn, either, just messed up.
So haters who hate the book really didn't read it from their hearts and they didn't understand the protagonists point of view.
This book is the one I started my reading with so it's really close to me.
This book is Romantic, charm, fun and erotic.
The book is more like a love story of two people who meet one who thinks he is broken beyond repair and one who has the light but doesn't know her strength.
Both characters are strongly build Christian gray is a control freak in this book but trust me it gets better in the other two.
Anastasia Steele was naive but that gets better too.
It's beautifully written showing every simple detail that you need to know the characters the best part is not only the leads grow into a better person and better for each other
Others around them grow too.
Usually writers forget about the character aside from the main but James didn't disappoint
Plot: 1 out of 5; Smut: 4.6 out of 5. Wish I could give half stars, cause this is a solid 2.5
Terrible story, the first 1/3rd was hard to get through. I put it down for a couple months before picking it back up to finish; cause I hate not finishing. Once the smut geared up it got more readable, but it really is just that. The whole abuse=BDSM plot line is bad. It's the guy being a stalker/insanely controlling that's really worrisome. It's also a very 2011 book and even feels dated more than that. I was 25 in 2011, at that point I had a smart phone for ~3 years. I get that Ana's a “bookish” gal, but her being so flustered by technology is a weird thing that comes up constantly. She's ~22, not 60.
The ending is abrupt and dumb - though it's clearly done so that you want to read the next book. My ebook had that 1st two chapters of the next book and that satiated my curiosity enough for now.
I'd read the next two if I didn't have anything else to read
Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!! Wait, you're telling me they were in Georgia and went to IHOP instead of Waffle House?!? Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!
thanks to this piece of garbage i'm physically incapable of reading any book with a fmc named Anastasia
I love Anastasia and Christian's love. I enjoy developing their relationship. Even though she is not part of his world, she manages to be with him. It's a relationship full of surprises and love. I like watching such couples. I recommend the book and the movie
Ik kan me niks voorstellen van de kink van Christan, maar het liefdesverhaal van Ana en Christan is wel erg schattig. Zo mooi om te zien dat Christan veranderd door de relatie met Ana.
Not bad, I started the series once before, but never finished the 3rd book so I am re-reading the whole series. Pretty good storyline so far.
I actually thought there were some interesting things in this book. AFAIK, people dislike it for a multitude of reasons, but the primary one is that they don't see it as a valid BDSM relationship given Ana's reticence. I think that's an accurate portrayal of the start of someone's BDSM experience, and thought it was interestingly deep (even if unintentional) to watch Ana process her feelings around submission and dominance.
Otherwise: basically just super-trite smut. I will finish the series because I'm a completionist and they're such easy reads.
I tend to re-read this series every year sometimes twice a year. I don't think I will ever grow tired of reading it. Every time I read it even though I know what is going to happen it gets me every time. I still find myself laughing out loud at parts and being heartbroken at others. Although I will say this time reading it Ana got on my nerves a little bit. At the beginning of this year I read Corrupt Me by Jillian Quinn and after reading about a strong female lead like Izzie who can hold her own Anas character sometimes really bothered me. When she finally stands up for herself which happens a few times throughout the book, that's how I wish she would be throughout the entire book.
Just could not read this ‘pathetic excuse for a book'.Flipped through it and i think giving 1 star would be rating it too high. Most non sensical book I've read.
I liked this book. Anastasia Steele clearly has some issues of her own. I mean I don't think I could've started my sex life off on such rough terms. But hey she liked it. It's very obvious that Christian Grey is messed up. I mean he likes to have all this kinky sex stuff, but doesn't want to be touched. He just has serious issues. I don't even know how Anastasia dealt with it, but I guess she would since Grey is her first. Some parts of this story confused me because I just don't see why Ana didn't run for the hills. But then I had to remind myself that Ana is not me, and I am not Ana. For some reason the end made me cry. I guess I'm a little emotional today, but I just couldn't stop crying once she realized how bad he was hurting her and how fucked up he was. I guess I just felt bad for her. I probably would have gave this book 5 stars if it didn't end with her crawling into bed hugging a balloon. I just couldn't deal. I mean I know the balloon had a significance to her, but who hugs balloons when they're sad. I think maybe Grey could have bought Ana a stuffed airplane, you know something soft and cuddly, and I probably would have respected this ending more. But I was just like grow up Ana and stop hugging balloons.
Male review:
Story: 8 / 10
Characters: 6
Setting: 6
Prose: 4
Fifty Shades of Grey is a surprisingly good book. I've asked countless woman what they thought of it and they always described it as a terrible book and a guilty pleasure. Obviously, I was curious and it was a good opportunity to explore more romance novels.
Turns out the story is actually fascinating. The reader is taken on a first love adventure with a university alumnus who is rather difficult to impress. The relationship creates an intriguing conflict from the start and the story flows around the secretive pair nicely. The prose is rather weak. However, it never really detracts from the strengths of the plot. There is also far too much erotica, but maybe that comes with the genre. My impression is that most people that really disliked the book have these aforementioned criticisms. If you can overcome these two shortcomings, this is a worthwhile read and a strange adventure.
I've also heard that this was Twilight fan fiction, but sadly it is too difficult to find. In fact, this book is quite a bit better than Twilight.
Read it in the Popsugar challenge - it is a horrible book. Where was the editor? Did she not work that year? 99% of the book should have been edited out, changed and re-written. Poor writing and terrible editing. Does not deserve 1 star.
