An exiled princess teams up with the last man she thought she could trust in the start of a dazzling and unforgettable epic fantasy romance series.
As a child, Elowen Atarah was ripped away from her dragons and imprisoned by her father, King Garrick of Imirath. Years later, Elowen is now a woman determined to free her dragons. Having established a secret kingdom of her own called Aestilian, she’s ready to do what’s necessary to save her people and seek vengeance. Even if that means having to align herself with the Commander of Vareveth, Cayden Veles, the most feared and dangerous man in all the kingdoms of Ravaryn.
Cayden is ruthless, lethal, and secretive, promising to help Elowen if she will stand with him and all of Vareveth in the pending war against Imirath. Despite their contrasting motives, Elowen can’t ignore their undeniable attraction as they combine their efforts and plot to infiltrate the impenetrable castle of Imirath to steal back her dragons and seek revenge on their common enemy.
As the world tries to keep them apart, the pull between Elowen and Cayden becomes impossible to resist. Working together with their crew over clandestine schemes, the threat of war looms, making the imminent heist to free her dragons their most dangerous adventure yet. But for Elowen, her vengeance is a promise signed in blood, and she’ll stop at nothing to see that promise through.
An immersive fantasy filled with a sizzling reluctant-allies-to-lovers romance, a world to get lost in, dangerous quests, dragon bonds, and an entertaining band of characters to root for, Fear the Flames marks the stunning debut of Olivia Rose Darling.

• this was really good! i loved the plot, loved elowen, and loved the romance
• my only complaints are as such:
1. i didn't feel like this book required nearly 600 pgs. there were some parts i felt were dragged on 2. the enemies to lovers lasted like five seconds. they didn't get together until the very end, but it was obvious they liked each other from the start. it wasn't enemies so much as they both liked to argue lol
• but genuinely other than that, i would have given this book 5 stars, and i cannot wait for the next one
I had a lot of fun with this book and think it’s appropriately hyped! Lots happened throughout and things start off quickly. The world is simple and has the classic details you would expect for fantasy where we have dragons, kings, queens, castles, etc. The cadre in this book were extremely likable and had great banter.
The writing felt a tad bit amateur at times, but nothing significant. It was noticeable enough that I kept having “huh?” moments. Enjoyed it either way and looking forward to the next book!
FEAR THE FLAMES was a great debut fantasy romance and I loved the chemistry and banter between Elowen and Cayden. They're not quite enemies but Elowen is the missing Princess from Amirath and Cayden is the ruthless Commander of an opposing kingdom. They strike up an alliance to benefit each other -- Cayden will help Elowen free her dragons from her evil father and Elowen will use them to fight in Cayden's war.
Together these two are a formidable pair and they understand each other in ways no one else does. They both have horrible trauma in their past and have been living for vengeance for a long time; I know morally gray MMCs are popular right now, but I loved that Elowen was equally bloodthirsty and badass. While they do have a lot in common this was still a slow burn and while I liked the tension I was getting tired of how delusional Elowen was about their relationship. It was so obvious that Cayden wanted her for more than the alliance but she kept taking one step back for every two steps forward. That got frustrating, especially after 70% into the book and of course the ending smashed any progress they made. I won't spoil things but it's a somewhat soft cliffhanger and barely an HFN so we'll have to wait for book 2 for Elowen and Cayden to get their crap together.
Outside of the romance, the world-building was simple but felt complete and easy to understand. The pace did drag a tiny bit in the middle and nothing really happened in between the small missions but for a debut this was really strong and impressive. The side characters were also really great and I loved Finnian, Saskia, and Ryder and I'd love to get more of their stories in future books. The dragons are minimal in this first installment of the series but what we got was fun and I'm looking forward to a lot more of them in book 2.
