A well-written account of the life of driven and self-righteous young man - he was just 36 when he was executed.

Robespierre is a complex character with a ego as big as the great outdoors. His unwaivering passion to preserve the gains of the revolution ultimately blinded him to the evil means he was employing in his misguided attempts to realize his desired ends.

His life and its violent end are probably one of history's greatest ironies
