Should have just left the first book a standalone sadly! This book is very long and there is no real excitement, tension or stakes. The climaxes are done in a page or two with little fuss or fanfare. They are also never wrong-footed, they never fail. You need failures to keep some suspense. It has great characters from all sorts of gothic books that are interesting but the plots are sorely lacking!
