Dragonsong

It always takes me a moment to get into a fantasy novel when there are elements that I have difficulty visualizing in my mind. But after I got past the introductory chapters and started really learning the characters instead of the setting so much I really started to enjoy the story. It ended up being much shorter than I expected but I truly enjoyed it and would like to read more. This is my first Anne McCaffrey novel.

Library book and Libby audiobook. I, now, own a paperback copy. I own an Audible edition.

Menolly is a gifted musician but because she is a girl, she can never be the harpist of her hold. She runs away and, taking refuge during a thread fall, encounters fire lizards. Gradually, she finds her place in Pern. Dragons...music...quest...it's a wonderful tale.

Over the years I have heard great things about this series, but just never got around to it. I finally picked up this book, and now I see what everyone was talking about. It was fantastic!!!! Pern has lived in fear of the Thread for centuries. During threadfall, it falls from the sky and anyone or anything in its path will be burnt up. The main thing that can stop it is fire. So the dragonriders mount up and stop it every threadfall. Living in her sea hold, Menolly doesn't worry much about the thread. All she wants is to become a Harper and create her own songs to sing. But, girls can't be harpers. According to her father, she is a disgrace. With nothing left to lose, she leaves her hold and starts a new life in a cave. Tons of adventures are in store for her! This book was great! I love Menolly and wanted to kick her dad's a** for the way he acted.

I really wish I'd read this as a child - the Pern series would've been completely up my alley then. As an adult, this book was still fun, but nothing to really enthuse about.

Loved these books as a teen. Still lovely.
