From one of today’s most original writers comes the mesmerizing tale of an exceptional young woman caught up in an otherworldly realm where some will stop at nothing to get what they want.
Paige Winterbourne was always either too young or too rebellious to succeed her mother as leader of one of the world’s most powerful elite organizations—the American Coven of Witches. Now that she is twenty-three and her mother is dead, the Elders can no longer deny her. But even Paige’s wildest antics can’t hold a candle to those of her new charge—an orphan who is all too willing to use her budding powers for evil...and evil is all too willing to claim her. For this girl is being pursued by a dark faction of the supernatural underworld. They are a vicious group who will do anything to woo the young, malleable, and extremely powerful neophyte, including commit murder—and frame Paige for the crime. It’s an initiation into adulthood, womanhood, and the brutal side of magic that Paige will have to do everything within her power to make sure they both survive.

First thing I have to say is when I picked up Dime Store Magic I expected witty humour, a strong take no lip heroine, and action galore. And the second thing I have to say is that is what I got. Kelley Armstrong's writing never ceases to disappoint whether the genre be YA or Adult. The characters are always real, the relationships between them dynamic, and the darkness thrown in keeping me glued to the pages.
From the Prologue the stage was set and from there the problems and enemies that Paige and Savannah had to face just kept mounting and mounting the next tougher to handle then the one before it. In this story loyalties were tested, prejudices broken (sort of) and our heroine strengthened. It was just one big chaotic ripple effect leading up to the climatic explosion in the end (not really but you get the idea) and I have to say if this was a movie I'd be walking away from the theaters going wow.
Despite the fact that I have read this before and knew what was coming, I couldn't put this book down! The witches are by far my favorite of the Otherworlders to read about.
What captivated me in this book was not only the personalities of Paige and Savannah, but the depth of imagination Armstrong used to define witches and sorcerers. It was an entirely new approach that connected with the modern day world.
Paige has a very noble cause when it comes to the Coven and I would like to see if her dreams actually become a reality. I wouldn't mind seeing the old geezers of the coven get the karma that's coming their way either.
And If I'm not mistaken, Savannah gets her own book. I stopped reading Armstrong, waiting for more books to be published, before I reached hers. I feel like plowing through the series for her book alone because she is my absolute favorite character in this series. Between her history and the glimpse of personality we see in Dime Store Magic, I want to see who she becomes. But Paige and the rest I'm sure will entertain me on the journey. :)
In Dime Store Magic we leave behind Elena and the pack and enter into the life of Paige Winterbourne, newly made leader of the American Coven after the death of her mother. Paige was originally introduced in Stolen - Women of the Otherworld #2. Dime Store Magic picks up after Paige and Savannah have returned back to Massachusetts, unfortunately the trouble isn't over for either of them. Leah, the telekinetic half-demon that we also met in Stolen has returned to cause some trouble.
I do enjoy these novels, so maybe it is just because I have been reading them one after another but I was feeling a little bored with this one. I also didn't love Paige. She's an alright lead but she's no Elena. Paige has this pesky conscience she has to deal with and it really gets in the way of things. Savannah on the other hand, didn't have this issue so pretty much everything entertaining that went on had to do with her.
The best part of this book is the last quarter, that's where everything happens. Once Mr. Nast got involved in things shit got interesting. I'm starting book #4 but I might have to take a break after that. I believe I'm reaching my saturation point. I can't even focus on writing a review...
Bleh. It was entertaining. People get killed, shit gets burned down, there is sexing to be had. All good fun.
