A super quick read as usual, 13 books into the series and it's still as good as the first book. I will say for this one I felt there was just something missing slightly for me, it just felt a little less fleshed out than usual but it was still great.
This is the first book I have read in the “D.I. Kim Stone” series and it is the 13th one! The series might be titled after the team leader Kim Stone, but Angela Marsons has created a dynamic cast of characters to support Stone. Deadly Cry is a diverse mystery fiction novel which starts with the team slightly occupied by other things than murder.
Penn, a Nigerian, is still emotionally recovering from his mother's death and now having the sole responsibility of taking care of his autistic brother. Stacey, a Black lesbian, is planning her wedding which takes place in less than a month. Someone who the team has worked with before is still dealing with PTSD. Plus the higher ups have been talking to Stone about a possible promotion that she isn't certain that she wants.
This is when Marsons throws in the first mystery and then a murder. Oh...I should probably say that it starts on page 2...the mystery. Marsons waste no time before you are hooked on the possibilities. Then another murder happens. Do not let the number of chapters scare you because Deadly Cry moves quickly.
I did not guess the culprit, but I did figure out one of the key plot points before the team. I was screaming at the book - in my head (laugh). I have to be honest though I figured it out due to a “shuffle” (hint).
D.I. Kim Stone will be a frequent visitor to Phoebe's Randoms as I plan on starting at the beginning. The cast created by Angela Marsons is a winner and I cannot wait to see more.
I received an ARC of this book and I am writing a review without prejudice and voluntarily.
Kim Stone #12 to #21
I went down a rabbit hole with Kim Stone. After eleven novels starring Angela Marsons’ brilliant, abrasive, sympathetic Detective Inspector, I was so enamoured with these characters, the mysteries, and all the other greatness that make these novels, I just couldn’t get enough of them.
Every waking minute that could be spent on the novels, would be.
Ok, a few times I would start to despair at the loss of the rule of law in the USA, witnessing how people like you and me are impacted by what that despicable orange person does.
And then I would immediately return to Kim Stone and her team. Penn, Stacey, Bryant (whose given name I now finally know!), Frost, and, interestingly, Leanne - they all have their moments. The stories always address relevant contemporary issues, they’re believable, suspenseful and thrilling.
I cannot review those novels individually anymore because once I had finished one (without taking the time for my usual highlights, notes, and annotations), I’d jump right into the next. I’d probably be facing the worst book hangover in decades if there hadn’t been a certain book to spare me that trouble.
Just know if you’re into mysteries and police procedurals (in rural Britain), you cannot go wrong with Angela Marsons’ Kim Stone.
Thus, I’m awarding five stars out of five to each and every instalment from #12 to #21 and will be copying this review to each of these.
