Reading this after watching the Netflix show and loving it is hard. And also unfair. Because I can't help but comparing them. It has less build up, everything goes a bit too fast. It's still a great story and I still love the characters even if different from the show. I just feel like if I hadn't seen the show, I would've been confused by some explanations because it's so succinct.
But I can't tell really if I liked it less because I saw the show or not. In any case I'm always a huge fan of Hamish Steele's work, the drawings are gorgeous, the characters are charming and the story holds up!
I had absolutely no idea what to expect when I went into this book. In fact, I didn't even read the synopsis before I started reading it– this was a case of seeing the cover almost every day for a few months, so I broke down and checked it out.
This is a wild ride. Fitting that it takes place in an amusement park. ;) So, there are demons, people summoning demons for their own gain, a talking dog, and let's not forget that the book starts at a different time with the main characters as ghosts. Oh, and did I mention the haunted house has a portal to hell? Yeah, it's great.
I really liked the characters. Barney is transgender and living at the amusement park because his parents kicked him out. Other characters at the amusement park have a LGBTQA social group too! That was a cool aspect. All the characters feel distinct and even some of the side characters got some personality too. I hope we get more of them in the next book.
This is wacky fun, but also has some emotional scenes. I look forward to reading more!
