Light grey text on a dark grey background? Oof. The eyestrain levels are astronomical in this book, especially in the digital format.
As for the story itself, it's... alright. It feels a little too spooky for very young children - there's what I'd call a ‘sequel bait horror movie ending' that might instill them with fear of purple crayons - but I think it'd be great for the slightly-older children who are already into spooky things and horror stories. It's genuinely a little spooky, with great atmosphere added by the artwork. And I think there... might be a lesson about not cheating in there somewhere...? Uncertain. It's kind of your classic “the cursed item helps you to the point of annoyance and you can never get rid of it” type of storyline.
Not the best, but certainly one of the very few options out there for the picture book crowd who're already little horror aficionados.
