I'll admit I went into this book with some misconceptions. I don't know if it was just cause how the blurb was written or if it was the second-hand info from people who had recced the book to me, but I was under the impression that the entire book would be a tense mystery leading up to finding out who killed her kid.

Instead, we find out whodunit in the first chapter.

All of my expectations for the book were present in the first chapter, and the rest of the book was spent exploring the aftermath of the reveal. And while it was still good, I think the plot blurb was misleading as to what exactly the plot of this book was.

I'm not saying it was a bad book, but I did end up disappointed from not getting what I expected I would.

I'd still say this was an enjoyable read. I thought the teacher's first revenge at the end of Ch 1 was really good, but the reaching consequences of what she did also added to the tension and horror of the story. Watching the slow descent of Naoki as he deals with the consequences, finding out that Shuya is somehow better and worse than we thought, all of it was very enjoyable.

I like what this book did, but I guess I just think it could have done it all better. I feel like the story would've been more compelling if it was structured like I thought it was, as more of a mystery rather than a ‘consequences of your own actions' type story.
