A lovely look at life in the 1940's and on seen from the eyes of a young girl surrounded by showgirls, actors, and people of all different sorts of lives. I really enjoyed Vivian's character, and the voice that the novel is written in. By the time you get to the end of the book, it really feels like she's a real person. This story is hugely sex-positive without any super explicit sex scenes written in, in case that bothers you. Vivian has a lot of sex with a lot of different guys, but it's mostly sort of glossed over in the narrative.
The best characters in the book are the women – women of all shapes and sizes and lifestyles. Absolutely none of them are apologetic about who they are, or what sort of life they lead. It's awesome to see.
I loved City of Girls, so much so that I'm upset that I left it on my TBR for so long!
