Love, love, love, love this book!! Jace is the sexiest blond ever described in a book. I am so excited for the movie!!
Relectura :)
DETESTO a Jace

OK, so teens LOVE these books and people my age HATE Cassandra Clare for being a cyberbully. I didn't love it, but I also can't bring myself to hate Clare for being a cyberbully, because who among us has not cyberbullied??? Be honest. OK, maybe YOU haven't, but I have definitely been a dick to people on the internet.
I'm about to be a dick on the internet right now, actually.
Anyway, I get why teens like this book. It's like... clever-ISH. All the snark might seem funny & original if you hadn't already spent decades consuming similar media. If you HAVE, it's kind of stale. The boys sound cute. It has ~edgy openly gay characters~ (take that, Twilight!)
Everything about it seems like she's kind of regurgitating tropes from different fantasy/horror books/TV shows. It's not terrible, but it's also not very fresh or compelling. Certainly not enough to get me to pick up the next FIVE books in this series.
Anyway, this is not the WORST teen bestseller I've ever read. But it's not the best, and definitely not good enough for me to recommend this to adults.
My favorite part was the SURPRISE INCEST because haha, what?! But even that is not particularly fresh. It just feels like she read a lot of VC Andrews growing up. Which I would bet you $5 she did.
THIS BOOK IS DEFINITELY WORTH READING. Don't let that terrible movie ruin it for you.
I DNF'd this. I don't really remember much, except that I was forcing my self to read it, so I stopped. all the characters seemed one-dimentional, immature, and annoying. Like the typical characters in most YA series.
Not my favorite series by a long shot. Very predictable, Mary Sue MC, classic YA (what's up with the [mainstream/traditional] YA genre and incest, btw? Jesus).
This book is an amazing book, filled with fantasy. The characters are amazing and I cannot wait to watch the movie.
This would have been 2 stars, but I have a hunch that Jace and Clary aren't actually siblings. Jace looks, talks, and acts more like a Herondale. Or maybe it's because I'm reading TMI right after TID?
ugh every time i kiss a boy i find out he's actually my brother it's the worst curse
2023 reread:the notalgia of it all
2018 reread:
The first time I gave this 3 stars. I don't know why I did that because the second time around, I loved this so much. I know this definitely has some faults like the writing isn't the best but it is pretty good. I give this a 4.5 stars but this book is so nostalgic for me. The characters are the world to me and I forgot so many things that happen but it felt so familiar at the same time. I don't think I could ever love a series as much as I love the Shadowhunter Chronicles. The Hunger Games got me into reading but I was just bored so after that, I picked up Divergent. I got addicted to it and I wanted more so I picked up the Mortal Instruments. My love for Divergent and the Hunger Games has dwindled over the 4 years since I read them. I will always love what they did for me but I don't love them anymore. But this series. I love it still and I will love it forever. On my deathbed I will reread all of Cassandra Clare's books and be so happy that it was the last thing I read.
I read this out of a fear of FOMO: the series hit its zenith past my YA prime, but the premise had me interested, especially considering Cassandra Clare has apparently developed her writing over time with her later Shadowhunter books. The start of this one was fun, but Jace is unbearable. What an edgelord - I have no idea what made people think this sort of attitude was ever attractive. I also knew about the “incest” part and still got whiplash. What a weird “twist.” Still, I've heard this is one of the weaker entries for Clare and that the series/universe gets better so I will likely continue in spite of the low rating.

finally done. the first 100pgs or so where nice but then it just got boring, to the point of me having to listen to the audiobook on 2.3x speed to get thru this crap. book itself isnt terrible, theres just not much happening for a book dats over 500pgs. also the plot twist is yikes but i already had that spoiled years ago
I loved this book so much, Cassandra Clare [a:Cassandra Clare 150038 Cassandra Clare https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1270502031p2/150038.jpg] knows how to write the best characters each with different emotions and personalities. I can't wait to start City of Ashes next. I highly recommend this book to anyone who hasn't read this series yet, there might be a few of them left I just recently discovered this series because of the EmmaBooks YouTube Channel.
I had seen the movie before and really loved it. The movie and the book are definitely very different. Not only the plot but many of the characters. Not only that but many other aspects caused me not to like this.
Mostly the fact that the possibility of incest is used as a plot device erks me. Not only that but the fact that Jace as a character is a horrible person who is a total dick the whole time and switches sides in two seconds when his adoptive dad tells him a bunch of lies. Even though this man was abusive as fuck. He is horrible to Clary for that entire sequence. It's so stupid and I hate it. It made me hate this book as well.
Probably not going to read the other book. I googled enough about to plot to give up on this series.
This was the first Cassandra Clare book I read, and I was not sure what to expect. I ended up finding it very enjoyable. Some of the plot twists I guessed early, others surprised me. I'm excited to get the next book from the library.
