In the late 19th century, Laura lives a lonely life in a schloss by the forest, Styria, with only her doting father and two governesses for company. A chance accident brings a new companion, however – the eccentric and beautiful Carmilla.
With charm unparalleled and habits as mysterious as her history, Carmilla’s allure is undeniable, drawing Laura closer with every affectionate touch and word. Attraction blossoms into a temptation Laura fears to name, a tantalizing passion burning brighter than the fires of hell. But when a mysterious plague begins stealing the lives of young women in her home and the village beyond, Laura wrestles to reconcile the truth – that the gentle, fragile woman she loves may be a monster cast out of heaven.
Carmilla, the classic vampire novella written by J Sheridan LeFanu, receives new life in this gorgeous retelling, centered on the provocative, controversial leads of the original, Carmilla and Laura.

When I read Carmilla, I was disappointed. There wasn't much of the romance promised, and the plot seemed slow until during the climax it was a bunch of nonsense with a massive info-dump. I liked how this book had a lot of the elements that the original had, but was much easier to follow. Not to mention the writing was fantastic as well as the romance. After comparing the two books, I feel like this book has way more plot, believable characters, and better worldbuilding. 10/10 would recommend!
I hate to give this two stars because overall I don't think it's a bad book, it just wasn't what I wanted from a Carmilla retelling. If you're looking for a vampire lesbian story that ends with them happily living the rest of their undead lives together then you'll probably like this fine. For me I was looking for a story that goes leads more with the horror of the original then a love story.
The two thing that I find irritated me was 1.Laura is more horrified and has a hard time reconciling her being gay then the fact that Carmilla is a vampire that must kill people in order to live and 2. All the deaths that Carmilla has causes and the horrible things that she has done are somewhat justified and she doesn't really face any consequences for her actions.
Again I realize I was looking for a very different type of story. This takes a horror story and makes it a romance where as I wanted to go more in depth with a classic horror story.
