Another can't-put-it-down entry in a very strong series. The Kate Burkholder books are a striking combination of noir and sweetness. The noir atmosphere permeates each book - while the murder mystery is always solved, it doesn't always feel like a satisfying victory because there is usually something deeply disturbing about the crime, victim or perp, and the case almost always has shades of gray that make justice difficult to find. The sweetness comes as a welcome contrast to the darkness of the crime plot; Kate and Tomasetti's relationship continues to deepen, with a welcome new development. Plus Kate truly cares about the cops and dispatchers who work for her, and she is able to help one of them reach a new professional milestone.

After ten books, this series shows no signs of losing steam.
