"Mackenzie Smith has always known that she was different. Growing up as the only human in a pack of rural shapeshifters will do that to you, but then couple it with some mean fighting skills and a fiery temper and you end up with a woman that few will dare to cross. However, when the only father figure in her life is brutally murdered, and the dangerous Brethren with their predatory Lord Alpha come to investigate, Mack has to not only ensure the physical safety of her adopted family by hiding her apparent humanity, she also has to seek the blood-soaked vengeance that she craves"--Page 4 of cover.

An interesting take on a lot of Urban Fantasy tropes. The most annoying that crops up is the ability of the "human" to keep beating everything up while half-dead. It was interesting enough to read through, but I don't know that I'll pick up any of the rest of the series.
Mack is a human raised by shifters. Hidden by her mother and left under the protection of John the country pack Alpha. Mack was always the outsider, a part of the pack but not. John trained her like one of his own and now as an adult its her the pack turns to when they need protection. But is she really human?
After tragedy hits the Pack, the all powerful Brotherhood's presents threatens Mack's way of life. Old law states that humans are not to know of their world. Will the Brotherhood discover her secret and kill her pack as punishment? Can Mack resist her attraction to Corrigan, The Lord Alpha? Will vengeance be hers?
I enjoyed this book. It was funny and suspenseful. I loved the subtlety of Corrigan and Macks attraction. The plot was the focal point with sprinkles of a romance. Helen Harper is a great author I will be reading more of her work.
