Cora Zeng is a crime scene cleaner—but the bloody messes don't bother her, not when she's already witnessed the most horrific thing possible: her sister being pushed in front of a train. The killer was never caught, and Cora is still haunted by his last words: "bat eater."
These days nobody can reach Cora: not her aunt, who wants her to prepare for the Hungry Ghost Festival; not her weird colleagues; and especially not the slack-jawed shadow lurking around her door frame. After all, it can't be real—can it? After a series of unexplained killings in Chinatown, Cora believes someone might be targeting East Asian women, and something might be targeting Cora herself.

This is probably one of the best books I've read since One of Us Is Lying, and a lot of the Tokyo Ghoul series. This was amazing and made me fucking cry. I love all of the characters we follow, and it just fills you with sadness but also rage. Who wouldn't feel outraged to know these things can actually happen, HAVE actually happened. Just because COVID just so happened to start in China. Yifei was definitely my favorite character, I loved how she was written. Cora was a very interesting one, and Harvey...while he made me mad sometimes, I really enjoyed his character too. <spoiler>Though I won't forgive you Kylie Lee Baker, for killing them off in such awful ways.</spoiler> Easy five star, I loved this on a deep level. <spoiler>The ghosts at the end helping her was just so...tear jerking. Like they pull her away from the flames, so she didn't get burned. It was so liberating, but heartbreaking at the same time. I also liked the last chapter, and the end...the ghosts aren't really gone</spoiler>
