Longer than a short story; shorter than a novella,
Although this is actually the first part of an extended novel, the story holds together as a self-contained unit. This is the part of the book that introduces us to the characters and concept of the story. So, we meet Sal, a police officer, whose brother, Perry, brings a book to her apartment while nebulously rambling about being stalked by “book burners.” Before you can say “Cthulhu's your uncle,” he's possessed and Sal meets three Vatican archivist/operatives, whose task is to locate and sequester objects that bring demons from beyond into our world. The Vatican operatives include a priest, a female kick-ass martial artist, and an Irish man who got into the supernatural too deep.
This was an engaging story with good potential for the series.
