This may well be Solzhenitsyn's best novel. The theme of a venal and incompetent bureaucracy needlessly wasting soldier's lives reminded me of Mark Helprin's [b:A Soldier of the Great War 87985 A Soldier of the Great War Mark Helprin https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1328874912s/87985.jpg 3279676].
