I think this is a great graphic novel for tweens and teens with climate anxiety (OK, and adults too) that doesn't give into easy answers but emphasizes community. I also really like how Wang portrayed Ash's deadname in text, with a black bar over the entire thing. It was an interesting way to both respect the character but also show their lived experience of hearing their previous name.
This was a great read. I feel like I was that kid that wanted to live in the woods with my dog and make it (yes, ‘My Side of the Mountain' was one of my favorites), but I certainly never went this far! I loved Ash and obviously Chase. I particularly loved how the story wove in a few generations, and how so many people can be frightened or feel out of place and need a break from constantly having to cope with it all and just be. Lovely art. Would definitely recommend.
A different take on the alone in the wild story. I love the respect for traditional knowledge and the emphasis that humans are part of nature, rather than battling against it. Beautiful art-style brings out the feelings of the poignant moments without words.
