This book serves as a great example of taking the author's distinct story-telling style that worked so well in his Beartown series and applying the same framework/flow across a different genre, with just as much success. There continues to be an elevation to the way narrative tropes are used, most evident in way the story is framed and the use of clever teases that create a proper amount of intrigue while also setting up reveals and surprises to come later in the tale. When you add in the writer's great turn of phase and the perfect amount of time spent adjacent to the main story, you get some unexpected additional layers to the stories and to the well-developed characters, as well. There is also clearly a strong understanding of people, behavior, and psychology but it plays out in a light, humorous tone that might even make you chuckle out loud a couple of times.
