Anno Dracula

I happened upon this book at a book sale and got it really cheap. I really loved how the author mixed historical facts into the fiction. This book had all of my favorite things: Victorian London, Jack the Ripper, Count Dracula, sex, intrigue and action! What a great roller coaster ride for the imagination.

This book is surprisingly awesome. The concept - Vlad Tepes/Dracula marries Queen Victoria, vampires become a part of Victorian-era society, oh and Jack the Ripper is killing vampire prostitutes - seemed like it had a lot of potential but would probably end up awful, as things like Pride and Prejudice and Zombies do. Instead, it was handled really skillfully; the vampires are not romanticized but are as varied in temperament and morals as humans, the adversaries are intimidating, the characters layered, and coolest of all (imo), there are constant tiny references to period literature, the original novel Dracula, and historical events of the time, which are so much fun to spot. In general, recommended, especially for fans of the era.

it's a little embarrassing to admit this, but i liked it. decent story, enough random victorian fictional characters to make easter egg hunting fun. writing is solid...

i should have waited until october though...i don't feel as bad reading guilty pleasure goth horror in october.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes vampires, Victorian history, or the history of pulp fiction or pulp horror, because this book covers each topic with aplomb. The premise has more depth than you think: Yes, Dracula is real, and yes, he's married the queen. But Newman hasn't forgotten anyone in his book.

Dracula's real, so doesn't it follow that other grand features of Victorian literature, and history, are real also? Sherlock Holmes can't solve this one, because he's been imprisoned for ‘subversive thinking' by King Vlad. Elizabeth Bathory sits cackling in the basements of Buckingham Palace. And the ripper still stalks the streets.

Kim Newman has a huge undertaking with this novel: To take every piece of vampire lore he can think of, and mix it with everything he knows of Victorian history, and make it all work. And he does! I've never read an alt history novel as good as this one. Newman doesn't forget any of the vast working parts of the engine that is Victorian London, but he doesn't get boggled down by details, either. Everything fits in a seamless background machinery that always feels real, and imbues every scene with vitality and credibility.

Dracula shows up for the last 15 pages of this thing fully nude and the first thing he says is “I am Dracula.”

Dans ce récit qui est en quelque sorte une uchronie d'une oeuvre de fiction, Van Helsing et ses compagnons ont échoué, Dracula a épousé la reine Victoria et règne en son nom sur un Royaume-Uni où les vampires vivent désormais au grand jour, ou plutôt en pleine nuit, aux yeux de tous. Dans ce contexte étonnant, de jeunes prostituées-vampires sont assassinées par un mystérieux meurtrier que la presse nomme bientôt Jack L'Eventreur.

Ce roman est un hommage vibrant à la littérature et à la culture populaire du XIXe siècle : les références sont foisonnantes, comme en témoigne les annotations à la fin du livre. J'avoue humblement en avoir raté un grand nombre. J'ai regretté quelques longueurs au milieu du récit, mais cela ne m'a pas empêché de prendre globalement beaucoup de plaisir à lire ce roman très réussi.

A little long but interesting and fun.

When I say fun I don't mean funny. It's a dark mystery involving vampires (who don't sparkle even a little) and serious matters. It's fun because it's a clever melding of various fictions from the late 1800's. Mostly British but a few Americans appear here and there.

This felt as if it was more fun to write than it was to read. You could tell it was exhaustively researched even without reading the various afterwords and annotations, but I'm kind of glad I'm not more literate, so many of the references passed me by completely. So much of the book is filled with name-dropping fictional and non-fictional characters, and it always felt more distracting than organic. Unlike “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen,” which used the same conceit, the characters seemed to be used for surface-level name recognition more than real narrative function.

Also, it felt distractingly crafted to be the start of a series instead of a complete narrative. The introductions seemed to go on interminably, but the story finally got really engaging with the introduction of a Chinese vampire. But that entire storyline just petered off as anti-climactically as possible, suggestion that Newman was hoping to introduce a spin-off series. And the novel on the whole just seems to leave its characters, reluctant to draw any of its stories to a conclusion.

I can't be too critical, since it flowed well and did have an engaging middle section, but it ultimately felt like an exercise more than anything else. It never quite settled for me as a satisfying alternate universe story, since the premise suggested a lot more upheaval than was actually shown. (The book simply wanted to have Victorian London + vampires, but having Dracula and his Carpathians actually take over the country to the degree that the book suggests would've made Victorian London unrecognizable). And ultimately, there was no “soul” to it — I don't feel any connection to any of the characters, and I don't believe it had much to say apart from plot.

I suspect this is an unfair review, mostly because I wanted the book to be something other than what it actually was.

A wonderfully inventive vampire novel, full of fictional and real characters, in a London where Dracula has married Queen V of England, and Jack the Ripper prowl the streets. Has left me thirsting for more.

Yay! Althist! En vampiers! En een heel boek vol verwijzingen naar andere boeken en dingen! (Nee serieus: zo ongeveer elk personage dat al was het maar een halve zin vermeld werd, komt vaak uit andere boeken, verhalen, films, series.)

En allemaal dingen tegelijkertijd ook–Mycroft als mover & shaker, doktor Moreau en Jekyll, Lestrade: wijs.

Dracula is prins-gemaal van Victoria, oude vampieren komen van overal in de openbaarheid, Dracula en de andere vampieren maken honderden en duizenden vampieren bij, en die maken weer vampieren, en er is miserie en hop kijk nu, er is een seriemoordenaar die nieuwe vampieren vermoordt in Whitechapel: Mary Ann Nichols, Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride, Catherine Eddowes... ayep: ze noemen hem Silver Knife tot hij ogenschijnlijk zelf een betere naam verzint in een brief naar de krant: Jack the Ripper.

Charles Beauregard gaat in opdracht van de schimmige Diogenes Club op onderzoek, samen met Geneviève Dieudonné (één van de elders onder de vampieren, ouder zelfs dan Dracula).

Uitstekend, vond ik. Ik heb lang moeten wachten voor het boek beschikbaar was bij Amazon, en de uitgave die ik las, was de heel uitgebreide versie, met meer dan honderd extra bladzijden: eindnoten, een alternatief einde, een filmscript, een aantal essays erbij. Aangeraden, en dan ga ik nu snel aan het vervolg beginnen.

What an amazing read! I love that this book was filled with so many gold mines for those who were fans of the original Dracula (of Bram Stroker fame) and several other great characters of the Victorian times. A must read for anyone who is a fan of paranormal or historical fiction!
