The animals were not being treated well by their ruler, the human Farmer Jones, and they, led by an elderly pig, initiated a revolution and became independent. Rules were established:
Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy.
Whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings, is a friend.
No animal shall wear clothes.
No animal shall sleep in a bed.
No animal shall drink alcohol.
No animal shall kill any other animal.
All animals are equal.
Things gradually began to change. The two pig leaders, Snowball and Napoleon, began to fight among themselves, and Snowball was driven off. Napoleon began to disseminate information through his mouthpiece, a pig named Squealer, and blame for all problems on the farm centered on Snowball, and the truth about events became unclear, and the rules were modified. Napoleon used force to control the farm, and he gave himself privileges that other animals on the farm did not have. By the end of the story, the pigs and the humans appeared the same in the eyes of the animals.
One of the members of my book club said during our discussion that this is a book everyone should read. I agree.
