Animal Farm as mentioned in book cover is the ultimate satire on fascism. A timeless classic put up in the simplest way possible which even a kid with no political understanding could grasp. But the novel demonstrates vast political problems through the eyes of animals instead of being through man. Inspired from the communist atmosphere in Russia the work also portrays author's belief towards democracy. While the work simplified complex politics it may lead the readers to easy conclusions on the power dynamics of various ideologies and systems. Orwell was too critical on the matter and portrays communism as only as a bad conduct and denies the even good in it and promotes anti-communist norm amongst readers. Still the novel stands as an important work and even in these days is a thing for debates and discussions.
As always, Orwell's classic political commentaries are relevant beyond the time he wrote them.
Disturbing but very enjoyable
When boxer died, I lost part of my soul
And I hate pigs now, thanks George Orwell
Un classique de George Orwell, toujours plaisant et intéressant à lire.
This book is amazing. It is truly a masterpiece by one of the greatest authors ever. George Orwell is a genius and this novels proves it.
One of those formative books. And yes, it was just like that, in Ceausescu's Romania.
Really fantastic use of fable and allegory. Recommend to anyone really. Only thing keeping it from a 10/10 is the silly/corny ending.
High 9/10
This book is a beginner to understand politics. Using animals as personas in the political world is genius and classics.
Someone, I think Mr. Calvino, said that A classical is a book that has a lot to say after you finish reading it. I can't think of a better example than this one. So much to be said, to think about, and put in such a simple, obvious and classic way.
This book is literally so much unique. It is not very long but the main theme of this book is so realistic. Abuse of power is clearly written here quite beautifully. This book is indeed a ‘ Books to read before you die ‘
Can't believe Orwell looked at the rise of the Soviet Union, the bloody collapse of a workers revolution into a personality cult that was completely detached from its original intensions, and thought “a great way to summarise this would be with farm animals”.
And was correct.
The animals were not being treated well by their ruler, the human Farmer Jones, and they, led by an elderly pig, initiated a revolution and became independent. Rules were established:
Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy.
Whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings, is a friend.
No animal shall wear clothes.
No animal shall sleep in a bed.
No animal shall drink alcohol.
No animal shall kill any other animal.
All animals are equal.
Things gradually began to change. The two pig leaders, Snowball and Napoleon, began to fight among themselves, and Snowball was driven off. Napoleon began to disseminate information through his mouthpiece, a pig named Squealer, and blame for all problems on the farm centered on Snowball, and the truth about events became unclear, and the rules were modified. Napoleon used force to control the farm, and he gave himself privileges that other animals on the farm did not have. By the end of the story, the pigs and the humans appeared the same in the eyes of the animals.
One of the members of my book club said during our discussion that this is a book everyone should read. I agree.
An old read from way back that I still find myself thinking about until this day. A great read.
