This was ultimately not a book for me. I think the pacing didn't really make sense - the setup for the story was more than 1/3 of the book - and I couldn't connect to the characters. The main guy seemed a bit detached, and the supporting characters were very poorly developed. But once I read that the author is a screenwriter, it made more sense. The characters seemed to be written for actors to bring them alive, rather them existing on their own on the page.
It should also be said that the summary on the dust jackets sells this as a completely different book than it really is. I was prepared for an epic time travel story but what I got instead was...well, I'm not sure what it was. Also, I do find the use of children as the main motivator for actions a bit boring, especially when it was used in the way it was in this book.
That being said, I think this would be a perfect book for someone who doesn't care for the sci-fi elements of time travel and want more of a story about regular people but with a touch of the fantastical.
