Agents of dreamland

This is a strange, strange book, set in a strange, strange version of our world. But strange as it is, it is completely compelling. It tells the story of a government organisation trying to protect the world, but doomed to ultimate failure. It can be described as Lovecraft-inspired dark horror. Well worth the read.

Agents of Dreamland by Caitlin R. Kiernan is a strange and compelling novella. The book blends conspiracy theories ranging from UFOs to cryptids and more with Lovecraftian elements, Biblical imagery, and more. Part apocalypse, part X-Files, something unique and different. I liked this book, although I had a challenging time following it as it weaved through different characters, times, places, etc. The text is loaded with references and ideas and it sometimes seemed overwhelming (perhaps as conspiracy theories and cosmic horror often are). Despite sometimes feeling confused, I was still intrigued by the story. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is not actually a complete story. It is, in fact, the beginning portion of a longer story.

With that in mind, however, it is a well-written story that, in my opinion, hooks the reader into investing in the story as it proceeds.

The story begins with a meeting between the Signalman and Immacolata Sexton. The Signalman is an operative for some American spook agency. He seems to be past his prime and we never find out what his name is or why he is the “signalman.” Sexton is scary spooky in some undescribed way. There is a supernatural vibe to her. The two meet and exchange cryptic bits of information and then go their separate ways.

There is a mystery involving a cult, a cult that has been exposed to a fungus. The fungus is taking over their bodies. There are references to the “Old Ones” and a Lovecraftian corpse is discovered. There are premonitions about the future.

In other words, this story is an homage to H.P. Lovecraft's universe. The story is well-written and engaging. The only drawback is that it was far shorter than it ought to have been.
