I thought this a was fantastic account and in actuality I don't think it's a hugely pro-Western book in all.
It was actually refreshing to read such a well-researched book about China in which the author seems to have made a genuine attempt to seek out and build lengthy relationships with people with very conflicting political and moral views. Especially where those relationships went well beyond what he might have ‘needed' in order to put together journalistic reports–you get a real sense that Osmos is actually trying to fully understand individual motivations.
Only made it about 35% through; I liked the book, but it wasn't something I cared enough about to finish reading.
