"After the fall of the Roman Empire, chaos and bloodshed swept across the remains of western civilization like a plague. Consumed by feudal warfare, Europe plunged into a centuries-long era of illiteracy and cultural desolation from which few historical records survived. Some believe that the true history of this dark age was deliberately concealed by its surviving scholars. Too incredible to be believed, too terrible to be retold. Until now"--Provided by publisher.

I got caught up in the hype of Inkshares and bought this book after listening to an interview with [a:Gary Whitta 355173 Gary Whitta https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1345654749p2/355173.jpg] on The Sword and Laser podcast. It was a good book, but seemed to miss the mark on hitting that sweet spot that makes you stay up late to see what happens next.
This one is tough to rate for me. I really like the concept and story. The history/fantasy work. The problem I had was there was no meat on the bone. It felt like a screenplay. I would have preferred more detail, backstory, anything. What was there was great it was just not enough. The concept needed more. It almost seemed like a novelette or side story to a bigger world. The whole first part of the book could have been a full long book on its own with the second part a side story.
