Sometimes complex, with some paragraphs full of confusing names, this book covers only a short period of time, but for Taiwan, clearly an important one.
Japan having just lost World War II, has just relinquished Taiwan after 50 years in control, returning it to the Chinese.
The Taiwanese who benefited from Japanese education and technology felt they would be treated as a special province, where they would be appreciated for their knowledge and leadership. Instead they were treated as inferiors and limited to lower roles in leadership.
This book looks at all aspects of the situation, from various sides, and presents in a balanced manner. The approach is very factual, albeit dry. Lots of of lists, some maps, lots of tables of statistics.
