This is a sweet little middle-grade novel that follows the friendship between Mimi, an American girl who is visiting her mother's family in Pakistan, and Sakina, a servant at Mimi's grandparents' home. The story was empathetic to both girls (Mimi's feelings about her father who left the family when she was little, Sakina's desire for an education despite her family's need for her income) and the love that the author feels for Karachi was clear in the writing.

Mimi's reactions to her mother annoyed me sometimes (especially the way she scolded her for doing anything that wasn't frantically searching for a guy who left her six years ago...) and things maybe wrapped up a little too neatly at the end but overall I enjoyed this book.
