Contains spoilers

* Nice to have an older woman protagonist

* Abusive mom is heavy, and a bit hard to read

* Found Community was kind, full of personality

* Didn't come together in the end. Falada + Penelope plots felt out of place

Very strong and dark beginning, but in the third act the book sags and becomes a bit boring and not as suspenseful. The geese in the book seem to be just for the sake of calling it a retelling of the Goose Girl fairy tale.

3.5 stars. I love T. Kingfisher, and enjoyed this book so much I read it nearly in one night. But I also realized that probably nothing in this book will stick with me long-term. It felt like more of the same.

an exceedingly well-written fairytale retelling. t. kingfisher's flow-y prose whisks you seamlessly through the story. loved hester and imogene. loved the bits of magic, darkness, mischief, humor, and amusingly placed gore. only wished the ending wrapped up a little more neatly.

4.5 stars.

This is the first T. Kingfisher book that I loved considering the fact that most of her books have been on the 3 to 3.5 star range. This book had a charm to it that held my interest and I really liked the characters.

Probably one of Kingfisher's best books. It's exactly at the intersection of her horror and fantasy writing, and it feels a lot more grounded than either (whatever that means for a book about sorcerers.)
