This book is very very funny. Relentlessly funny and it is almost distracting, I lost the plot some times because I was laughing so hard. That is my only big problem. The world that VanderMeer created for here is recognizable but distinctly different, very enjoyable to explore. The characters are solid and the alt world folks really serve the humor well. VanderMeer's writing is excellent. So why 3 stars? Well, if 3.5 was possible I would do it but it is not. Like I said the humor is relentless at times distracting and in a work that is long, 21 hours in audiobook, it felt like it wandered at times? Unfair? Or was I just impatient? Recommended but I suggest taking it in chunks because there is a lot going on here.
3.5. It took a bit to grow on me, and was pretty chaotic feeling for a while. That does eventually lead into a story that makes more sense, in its way, but some descriptions feel a bit less than they should be. It can be a bit hard to visualize at times. With a book containing this much absurdity, it's necessary to give a little more descriptions sometimes. It was a fun read, and pretty quick-paced once I got past the initial “what the fuck am I reading how are these connected” feeling.
In some places I'd give this a 5, and in some places I'd give it a 1–and so we have a 3.
