I've put this book on so many TBRs over the past 2-3 years and I'm happy to say I have finally read it. This was my first book by this author and while it didn't end up being a favorite I did end up liking it overall and I definitely want to pick up more books by this author.
My review is going to have some spoilers so if you haven't read this book yet I suggest skipping my review. It took me a while to get into this book mostly because I was in a slump when I was trying to read it and me and unreliable characters weren't getting along at the time but I pushed through and ended up enjoying it. I love the setting of this book. It takes place on a luxury cruise ship. To me being secluded in the middle of the ocean on a ship is way more nerve racking then if this would have taken place back on land. Don't get me wrong both are equally horrific but literally having no place to go just adds a little something to the fear aspect.
Lets talk about Lo our main character. She takes antidepressants for her anxiety and I loved how this was portrayed. Normally when you read a book that deals with a mental illness usually the use of medications to treat said illnesses aren't portrayed in a positive light but with this book the author portrayed it perfectly. My issues with this book have to do with Los drinking. She's made an unreliable character because she literally gets so drunk that she blacks out so you don't know what is real and what isn't. I don't particularly like when books do this. I don't really even like reading books where people get shit face drunk. If you want to drink that's all good but I would prefer to read books where the characters drink responsibly and don't make stupid decision after stupid decision like our main character did.
The last like 20% of the book things finally started to happen and I started to enjoy it a little more. There were reveals that I didn't see coming so that was good but I'm still torn on how I feel about the way it ended. I'm the type of reader who wants all of the bad guys to have some sort of punishment and that's all I will say about that. Overall I did like this book and it made me want to pick up other books by this author but it wasn't a favorite for me.
So, this is basically The Girl on the Train... on a boat.
There are too many throwaway red herrings that are not explained. Perhaps the most unbelievable part is that Lo and/or her colleague and ex-boyfriend, Ben, are aspiring “investigative journalists”. I don't think these two could find their way out of a paper bag (after Lo has imbibed whatever alcohol was in said bag).
Only one way to read this one: suspend your disbelief and don't think about the answers you're given.
As this is my introduction to the suspense, mystery genre and this is also my first audiobook experience, I liked this book a lot.
This story took quite a bit of time to develop and seemed to meander at will. Laura (Lo) had a lot of issues that contributed to her not being taken seriously by many when her story couldn't be validated. But then, the story took a turn and things got tense as we are put in the position of believing her account. Of course, I guessed wrong (probably missed a few clues when my mind wandered) and the clever little twist at the end elevated my rating.
I enjoyed the narrator, Imogen Church, who really captured Lo's character. Be forewarned that her interpretation of an American accent will make you chuckle. I'm glad I decided to listen to the story because she made the slow start more interesting. While this wasn't the most original plot, it was entertaining. Just hang in there until things get going.
3.5, porque embora eu tenha realmente me surpreendido e achado o final um acalento, achei também que a personagem principal era muito sem gracinha e sem carisma e o final poderia ter sido mais explorado.
Not my favourite from Ruth Ware but still an enjoyable read! I liked the setting and mystery being contained on the boat, but for such a short book I did feel a little bored at times. Perhaps the pacing was off or I read it at a time when I was distracted, I just wasn't gripped the entire time.

Buku pertama miss Ware tdk bekerja untukku, namun biasanya aku memberi kesempatan untuk membaca 2 buku karya penulis yg sama sblm memutuskan aku gk cocok dgn gaya penulisannya. Dan setelah 2 buku gk bekerja baik untukku sepertinya aku tidak berencana membaca Ruth Ware lagi.
Seperti In A Dark, Dark Wood, tokoh utama The Woman in Cabin 10 adalah tokoh yg sangat susah untuk disukai. Tokoh Rachel di The Girl on The Train juga alkoholik, namun ada beberapa alasan yg bisa membuatku tetap mempunyai simpatik padanya. Namun sangat sulit untukku untuk menyukai tokoh Nora & Lo. Alur yg sangat lambat narasi yg terlalu panjang hanya seputar apa yg dilakukan oleh tokoh utama (yg sebenarnya aku gk terlalu peduli) membuatku bosan & mengantuk.
I listened to the audio version of this book and really enjoyed the narrator. I was frustrated with the main character because she seemed odd. If you only read the parts she spoke you would think she was mentally disabled. She stammered all the time and did not seem like the professional journalist she was supposed to be. Sure she was having trouble with anxiety but I don´t believe she would have been sent on this trip. She just didn´t seem capable of her job....or speaking. I did enjoy the book though and definitely recommend the audio book.
Lo wakes up one night and realizes something isn´t right. She isn´t sure what woke her up but her bedroom door is shut and she didn´t shut it. She opens it and sees a man standing there. He has a mask on and surgical gloves and in his hands was her purse. She is paralyzed with fear. The man suddenly slams the door in her face and smashes the lock, trapping her in her room. Her face was hit by the door when it was slammed and she is dazed and bleeding. She can´t call for help since her phone was in her purse. When she finally gets out she finds the intruder is gone and so is her purse with wallet and ID. He also took her computer which had her banking into on it. She puts on a brave face but inside she is traumatized. She calls to tell her employer why she didn´t come in but she said she was fine for the cruise she was set to go on. Lo is a travel journalist and excited to finally get a chance to prove herself. The trip was going okay until she woke up suddenly. She thought she scream and then she heard a big splash like someone someone falling into the water. She looks out and thinks she sees a hand below the surface. She called to report it but the chief of security doesn´t believe her... because no one was missing. The person who was going to be in cabin 10 cancelled at the last minute. But Lo talked to a woman that was in there and borrowed a mascara from her. Now she is sure someone killed her and threw her overboard. How could she get them to believe her?
What a pleasant surprise! I am always surprised when I actually enjoy a silly thriller. It was the boat that made me want to read this. I think I'll give Ms Ware's debut a shot.
Like others have stated I enjoyed Ruth Ware's first book much better. This book just left me wanting more. Some of her descriptions of people were just off putting and some of the plot twists were just too predictable. I found it hard to like the main character Laura.
This is my first book of 2017 I enjoyed it immensely. This wasn't what I expected but I have to say Ruth won me over. I had a hard time with the first couple of chapters but I knew I would a friend of mine read this and said it was slow. But man once it gets going you can't put it down. I finished it at 5:15 this morning.
Lo as a character is very well written, she has the typical personality of a writer who does not and will not give up on her story. I thought I had this story figured out but man was I wrong. A wonderful who done it that will keep you up all night.
