whew.... i wanted to love this so much but an acotar book that takes me TWO MONTHS to finish?? ...... read for the smut, not the plot :(
as an aside, nothing will ever bother me more than knowing that Prythian doesn't have a word for shampoo (“Vials of what had to be concoctions for washing one's body and hair”) yet everyone and their mother says “smutty smutty smut smut smut books smutty romance novels” all the time. SJM please make it make sense
Appreciated this and a deeper dive into nesta's psyche. Loved the feminine power throughout. Was pretty turned off by how explicit the book was—felt like it really ramped up for this one. Perhaps it's because I listened to the audiobook this time around but...dang. Just a lot of content where I was like
I found this book better than the others. 5 stars easily!
This book was beautiful and I had just been waiting for Nesta's story. It was blantantly different to that of Feyre, I wasn't so interested in Feyre's story after A Court Of Mist And Fury but stuck with it for other characters (Nesta and Azriel tbh).
I loved how Nesta's improvements were measured against the 10,000 stairs, it was really symbolic and pretty awe inspiring. Going from a terrible drunk to this formidable warrior, who has finally learnt to show her love of people. One of the realist character arcs I've ever seen
Update: Now that I've finished my re-read of acotar, I can now say I'm due to change all the ratings accordingly because they seem wrong to me
Update: Now I'm changing the ratings, I realise this is solidly in the 4 camp since I don't ever go to 4.25 stars and I refuse to rate it up
A mixture of brilliance and frustration - I really appreciated the character development of Nesta, and how she grapples with her demons from her childhood and the war in order to seek redemption from her family and the ‘inner circle'. The pacing of this book was less than desirable, and certain plot points felt underdeveloped. I believe the romance storyline of this book overshadows other potential storylines, leaving some aspects unexplored or rushed (there was spice scenes that went on for 15+ pages but a pivotal enemy was defeated in 3). While it has moments of brilliance (I can't believe my favourite new character was a house), the book struggles to reach the heights of the original trilogy.
Perfect
I didn't think I would like Nesta as much as I do after reading this and I didn't realize I was so emotionally attached to these characters until I finished this book and now I don't know what to do with myself
Absolutely outstanding book, great insights into characters who have been delightful side characters up until now. Love Nesta's growth throughout the whole book as well as Cassian just in general.
Absolutely loved this book, Maas made me hate Nesta and now she made me love her again. As per the rest of the series, each character and their stories are beautifully written and woven together, this was truly a pleasure to read.
I feel like people either love or hate this series and I can confidently say I am someone who loves this series. The characters are so easy to get wrapped up in. You're just routing for every single one of them. SJM creates characters (especially female ones) whose flaws are just that, flaws. They grow and hurt and love and lose and experience their trauma and rect in ways that's understandable.
First, I would never say I could relate to Nesta in any way from the previous books. However, now I think I may be more like her than any other character in an SJM world (keeping in mind I haven't read TOG yet). I think that's why I love the ACOTAR series. With every book you learn more layers to each character and it's impossible not to feel for them. Also, the relationships (and of course, the sex) is just a fantasy come true.
I'm eager for more books and learning more about these characters and this world.
Nesta, Nesta, Nesta! I was pleased when my bestie alerted me that she is the star of this one.
****SPOILERS AHEAD****
I was also pleased to find that Maas' ability to write sex scenes, which I already found competent, has increased across this series. What this obviously means is that she should next turn her growing abilities to a book with Mor and whomever her lady love turns out to be, for one of the upcoming ones!
But back to this book - I read someone else's comment that another of Maas' skills is presenting a couple you root for, then demolishing your love for them with an even better one, and so on. I really do like Nesta and Cassian together, because Cassian has many of Rhys' good qualities, minus some of his bad (like his terrible habit of attempting to protect loved ones by withholding information from them - dude, get over yourself!!).
I will say that a corner Maas has backed herself into is one I heard someone talking about re: the Marvel franchise: if every character has world-ending powers, then all the conflicts are bombastic in a way that can eventually get boring! Maas has a related but different plot issue: if Rhys is really the most powerful High Lord who has ever lived, and Feyre is his equal, could they really not just have tweaked her pelvis for childbirth on their own? I say that because I love Nesta best as her Death God self, so I was a little sad to see her powers diminished (and think it would have been potentially more interesting to see her continue to wrestle with walking away from the option of total world domination). That loops us back to the Marvel issue, though, which is if Nesta stayed a Death God, what would the conflict in the next book look like? So I'm not smart enough to have a solution, just smart enough to see the issue, lol. Carry on, Maas, I guess!
Quero o livro do Azriel urgentemente. Não me importa quem seja o par romântico. Preciso que ele seja feliz.
I always had my issues with this series but I loved it regardless. I usually fly through the books and live vicariously through the story but this?
The writing style genuinely does not work for me. We do dialogue, then we have a ridiculously long inner tangent about something that happened prior, then we continue the dialogue and then we think about how horny we are. Then we resume talking and then we think about how five years ago something happened and how it made us feel.
I just can't immerse myself in the story. As a big supporter of Women's (sorry, females) wrongs, I was incredibly excited for Nestas story and I was left mostly disappointed, sadly.
I was hoping the last act would pick up and redeem the slow build up, but it just mostly left me baffled.
The depression hike? The suicide pact?? Nesta losing all her powers and using her last wish to modify her pelvis for childbirth???
The house was the best part.
just when i thought the series couldn't be any more perfect, this book comes along. i'm in awe
I loved it, these characters will always be my favorite. I cried, the sister moments are so raw.
Beautiful stunning excellent Nessian content but the ending was rushed as all hell and that made me sad. Still 5 stars cuz Nesta is a bad bitch.
I enjoyed this book thoroughly!
I kept getting told this book is spicy (and it is) but it is about so much more than that. It's about trauma and healing, about the love of family - both born and found. About the enduring strength of female friendships.
I will always quibble about this series often less than stellar world building but it fades away in the face of how thoroughly enjoyable the stories are.
I loved it! I had a really good time reading it.
I relate to Nesta more than I relate to Feyre. I loved this book. It would have also been 5 stars, but I feel like it should have been edited down. Like with most of the books in this series, the beginning was unnecessarily slow. Still amazing.
