Infinitely better than the first. improved writing, improved character development. I do hope Maas gets over the words “bark” and “snarl” in the next installment. I got pretty tired of all the sex barking.
Soms kan je gewoon geen woorden vinden die beschrijven hoe goed je iets vond. Het enige woord dat bij mij opkomt om een hint van dit boek te omschrijven is FE.NO.ME.NAAL. Met hoofdletters en pauzes en dan nog komt het niet eens dichtbij.
Eerst was ik een beetje beducht over dit vervolg, omdat ik dacht te weten wat me te wachten stond: Een typische liefdesdriehoek als in zovele young adults, waarbij de heldin moet kiezen tussen de goeie, lieve jongen en de bad boy. Daar had ik mij voor op gemaakt, maar mannekes toch, hoe verkeerd kon ik het hebben? Sarah J. Maas kan goed met je voeten rammelen, maar ik laat ze maar al te graag rammelen als ze daardoor een meesterwerkje als Court of mist and fury mee uit haar mouw schudt.
Eerst en vooral, de wereld die wordt opgebouwd is subliem.
In A court of Thorns and Roses vingen we al een glimp op van het wonderbaarlijke Prythian, maar waar onze kijk in boek 1 beperkt werd tot één Hof en één kerker, krijgen we nu een volledige wereld te zien, het ene wonderbaarlijke hof na het andere, elk uniek en extreem gedetailleerd. En je ziet ze echt zo voor je geestesoog verschijnen, weelderig en zoet, angstaanjagend en hard.
Dan de personages, mijn god, die personages.
In boek één leren we een handvol figuren kennen, sommige met diepgang maar vaak ook gewoon vage silhouetten. Die personages worden in dit boek verder uitgediept en tal van nieuwe personages worden uitvoerig geïntroduceerd.
Feyre, ons hoofdpersonage, ondergaat een ongekende transformatie, maar geen moment vond ik het ongeloofwaardig of uit haar rol. Haar emoties en gedachten worden zo goed verwoord doorheen dit boek. De schrijfster neemt echt haar tijd opdat je Feyre zou begrijpen en dat doe je ook. Je kan echt met haar meevoelen, haar tweestrijd, haar besef over wat is gebeurd, wat haar is aangedaan, hoe ze nu is. Je voelt haar schuld, haar afschuw, haar lusteloosheid en dan haar vuur, haar duisternis en haar licht. Dit ganse boek is een achtbaan aan emoties, zo realistisch neergeschreven dat je constant meeleeft.
Daarbij, bij die geweldige wereld en die levendige personages, komt dan nog eens de weergaloze verhaallijn.
Het verhaal is zo groots en komt mijlenver boven een simpele hervertelling te staan. Boek 1 brak al al mijn verwachtingen door de extra dimensie die in het gekende verhaal van Belle en het Beest werd geweven, maar boek 2 doet daar nog een gigantische schep bovenop. De vergelijking is niet meer correct. Sarah J. Maas schreef haar eigen verhaal en wat voor eentje zeg!
De laatste hoofdstukken braken mijn hart. Er gebeurt zo veel, zo afschuwelijk veel en ik voelde mij even gebroken als Feyre. Maar er is hoop, een licht aan het einde van de tunnel, maar we hebben nog zo'n reis te maken. Een reis die mij ongetwijfeld weer door de mangel zal halen, maar die ik moet maken. Ik wil weten waar Sarah J. Maas ons nu naar toe zal brengen.
A Court of Mist and Fury is een episch fantasieverhaal over zelfontdekking en -aanvaarding, over kiezen en mogen kiezen, over respect en gerespecteerd worden, over vooroordelen en trots, over liefde in al zijn vormen en facetten, die voor je geliefde, je vrienden, je familie en je thuis. Dit boek is dat en zo veel meer. Een grote, grote aanrader!
3.3.21 update: I forgot how fucking fantastic this book is. I think ACOFAS ruined my memories of just how good this book is. I'm in awe. My mind is in pieces. My thoughts are unfathomable. I thought he was arrogant and unrelatable. I wasn't even wrong, but I was in a whole different universe. He is arrogant, I was right about that, but he's sweet adn caring and perfect and another reason why I hate Sarah. I fall in love with her characters too easily. Also another reason why I hate SJM, she isn't afraid to branch out with her books even if her ideas are insane. She always makes it work. I mean, compare [b:Throne of Glass 7896527 Throne of Glass (Throne of Glass, #1) Sarah J. Maas https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1441230104l/18006496.SY75.jpg 25272067], and you get two completely different stories, and compare ACOTAR with ACOMAF, the exact same thing. I can't even gather my thoughts right now to write an honest review. I'll work on it tomorrow after I sleep on it. If you are reading this Sarah, then there is a way to buy my love. I want copies of Empire of Storms and ACOTAR #3 in my hands yesterday. Maybe I'll reconsider.

I was legitimately worried about this book. Because although I mentioned that I was rooting for someone other than Tamlin in my review of A Court of Thorns and Roses, I didn't go into details as to why.
Honestly, it's been long enough that I don't remember all of the details, though a couple do specifically stick out in my mind because I hated them so much. I found their relationship to be at turns boring and extremely problematic. But I won't go into that now. The only reason it wound up with a positive rating was for the last portion of the book and the fact that I thought SJM might be about to take us on a wild, twisty ride that deviated hugely from what we thought the set-up was going to be going in.
And THANK THE STARS, I was right.
That is all I'm going to say. I'm in love. I still had a few issues with this book - it wasn't perfect. But holy wow, was it amazing. ♥
This was absolutely phenomenal. While I adored ACOTAR (obviously, I mean come on), this... Now this left me speechless.
The writing is just so (excuse my language) damn good.
It's got romance, and gore, and betrayal, and politics. And if you dig retellings? When then this has it all. The characters have such depth and are so intriguing. It leaves you wondering who the villain really is, and that- that is what you want from a book.
It takes the first book, which was already great, and makes it look like a children's book.
This series is quickly becoming one of my all-time favorites, possibly even surpassing TWC trilogy.
This book. Oh dear Cauldron, THIS BOOK. I already know this is going to be my favourite book of this year(at least until Empire of Storms comes out, and, CANNOT WAIT) and the year's not even halfway through yet.

So since Feyre is now the High Lady of Night Court I am DREADING that Sarah J Maas will kill off Rhys and I do NOT want that to happen but it might happen just to prove some point about moving on with her immortal life or something and NOOOOOO I will cry if Rhysand darling dies ugh.
