JOHN LYNCH is director of the Institute of Latin American Studies at the University of London, where he has been teaching since 1961. He is the author of several works, including *Spanish Colonial Administration 1782-1810* and *Spain under the Hapsburgs*. This volume is part of the Revolutions in the Modern World series.
