actual rating: 3.5 star
a book that is written so simply but has a very strong narrative. this was a quick read at less than 230 pages and is mainly about the struggle of family loyalty vs doing the right thing. it was an engaging read, but for me was one that won't be very memorable. still a really good read tho!
actual rating: 2.5 starsthe premise was super interesting but execution kinda fell flat. wondering if maybe i just don't like king's writing style? will still give the man a chance tho
i just.... it was..... i..... where do i start???? all i have to say is.... this gave [b:The Hating Game 25883848 The Hating Game Sally Thorne https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1467138679s/25883848.jpg 45762345] a run for their money. and i fucking loved the hating game. please read this. please. i'm begging you. you will laugh and cry and smile and cry more. one of my favorite books to date, seriously :โโโโโโโ(
4.5
dense, atmospheric, intriguing, but LONG asf. surprisingly for how long it was there weren't any dull moments. these kids are crazy
oh my god, this book dragged on for SO LONG. none of the three queens were interesting whatsoever and they were just so weak and pathetic tbh. it was so hard to get into that i ended up listening to the audiobook which still couldn't keep me interested. i would've rated it 1 star if it weren't for the unexpected romance and the cliffhanger at the end.

this wasn't anything special, but the storyline definitely has lots of potential. it was a decent first book, but nothing i'd rave about - i hope the rest of the series lives up to the hype, though.

I'm surprised this has a pretty high rating because I found this book slow, uninteresting, and cheesy
idek know how to continue living after reading this bc i feel so EMPTY. i don't even know what to say. this was brilliant
and it's over :โโโ(( this series has had me in an absolute chokehold for the last few weeks and this was a great ending for illea & the royal family. i love eadlyn sm i want her to be MY queen. im so emotional omfg
this was a fun read for a young adult book, but it wasn't groundbreaking.
as a mystery book it didn't really do much for me. it was fun to see them sneaking around for clues and testing their theories but it lacked the suspense of figuring out the mystery, which is what i look for.
the characters were kind of bland as well. my favourite was shira who was the โstoner' but actually wasn't, she'd only manipulated people into thinking she was. unfortunately, her character wasn't explored very much in the book.
reading rush book #5!!!!
yo this was such a good ending to this whole ~spill zone~ mystery! definitely some crazy plot twists that i really liked and tbh i kinda wanna know more about this world.
SO FRICKING CUTE!!!!!! altho i feel like its impossible to find anything as amazing as heartstopper
actual rating: 2.5 stars
I don't know if it was because I didn't enjoy the narration of this audiobook, but this book really didn't do it for me. The story follows Brynn who does small-scale cons so that she can move out of the house she lives in with her mom and drug dealer boyfriend. Little does she know, she is recruited to attend a school where they are essentially unofficial spies for their headmaster. Now, this is an interesting premise but the plot didn't draw me in at all. I found myself bored of Brynn's problems and found her annoying and whiny. The only character I kind of liked was Caleb. Otherwise, meh. Also the blurb calls describes the book as โPretty Little Liars meets Ocean's 11,โ but I don't think it is anything like either lol. This book is definitely meant for a specific demographic (probably early to mid-teens) which I do not fit. Would recommend for a younger reader, though!
will someone be an angel and buy this book for me - broke but i need this baby IN MY HANDS
โโFunny. Slave masters thought they were making a different in black people's lives too. Saving them from their โwild African ways.โ Same shit, different century. I wish people like them would stop thinking that people like me need saving.'โ
this book is so fucking important. everyone in the whole world needs to read this. this gives the reader a lot of insight on the black lives matter movement and what is actually means. i must say, THUG opened my mind up a lot.
Ok I loved this book, I really couldn't read this fast enough. Every character in the book is so perfectly densely written. I loved the commentary on social classes and the fact that the going to college-getting married-having children life doesn't necessarily mean your children will make the right choices. I have so much to say about this book just gifudhdduhxfhehehrhhehrhthehdb 100% recommend!!!!!!!!!!!!
Actual rating: 4.5 starsI devoured this book in two days. I tend to do this with mystery books because I needed to know who did it. The circumstances were just so... strange.Although this book is called One of Us is Lying, I couldn't help but believe each character during their respective perspectives. When Addy said โUnless one of us is lying. That's always a possibility.โ I was like OH DAMN CAN'T TRUST ANYONE EVERYONE IS SUS NOWI liked that this book read more like a traditional young adult book than a mystery. That being said, I thought it was lacking the thrill and suspense aspect of a mystery (to which I recommend [b:Dangerous Girls 16074758 Dangerous Girls Abigail Haas https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1356513050s/16074758.jpg 21869436] by [a:Abigail Haas 6551240 Abigail Haas https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1377257031p2/6551240.jpg] because damn, that book was a RIDE).Ultimately, this was a really, really good read. I felt the ending was really satisfying and tied up all loose ends. Turns out there's going to be a sequel, so I'm excited to see what McManus decides is next for these characters.
not long before i read this, i also read [b:Asking For It 25255576 Asking For It Louise O'Neill https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1445503799l/25255576.SY75.jpg 44977539] and it really baffles me how teenagers turn to slut shaming when a girl is sexually assaulted. books like these (others i've read being [b:Speak 39280444 Speak Laurie Halse Anderson https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1529044298l/39280444.SY75.jpg 118521] and [b:The Way I Used to Be 23546634 The Way I Used to Be Amber Smith https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1433883455l/23546634.SY75.jpg 43145997]) are so important and i'm very happy that authors continue to address the effects of trauma. this book in particular stood out to me because it tells the story of a girl in the middle of both sides of the assault - and man, is it too real. this is definitely one i'm not going to forget any time soon.
actual rating: 2.5 stars, rounded up
somehow, this book was even worse than the first one. well, the first one wasn't terrible, it just took a very long time introducing the characters and it wasn't executed very well. in this second book i expected more adventure and jamie finally showing his potential. but no, all we got was charlotte being difficult (again) and jamie being in the dark and still... kind of useless.
this is the kind of book that i read quickly just to get it over with, not necessarily because i enjoyed it. although i didn't enjoy this book, the mystery lover in my just needs to know what happens to the characters. i'm probably still going to read the next book in the series because i love the concept of a modern day sherlock holmes so much that i'm still going to give the series a chance. the next book, the case for jamie has a better rating than its predecessors, so i'll probably read it, BUT it's definitely not high on my book queue.
objectively this was not a great book. but subjectively... i ate this book UP lmao. i love a trashy toxic romance
