This part definitely stunned me. It's full of twists and turns and got me hooked up so well that I was putting morning alarm to make sure I get at least 60-90 minutes of uninterrupted listening time. (I listened to the Audiobook). This was epic. I wish the story ended here but there is a third volume which I will pick up soon.
If there is one book you want to keep with you forever it's this one.
It is not a religious book, it is a spiritual one. I rarely read religious or spiritual books but Gibran's poetic prose is exquisite. It massages your soul and leaves you wishing you too could express yourself in such a profound and beautiful way.
The passage on Children is one of my favorites.
Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.
They come through you, but not from you.
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.
You may give them your love, but not your thoughts.
For they have their own thoughts
You may house their bodies but not their souls.
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backwards nor tarries with yesterday.
You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.
What a wonderful book. All the characters are so adorable. This book is all about the chemistry between all these characters. Though they are from different alien races, it's very much a found family dynamic, it is very much about the people that we meet along the way and how they become part of our family, our group of friends, our colleagues. This is an adventure story with colorful and vibrant and lively characters but it's still science fiction.
I think I found my comfort Sci-Fi author in Becky Chambers. She is clever and very diverse.
This is a rare occasion when I was so engrossed in any of the SF books. The characters, science is so believable and sounds very relatable but has a lot of scientific flaws. Don't dig deep there.
It's a journey in the history of science and modern cutting-edge technological advances.
I loved this first volume and looking for answers in the second and third.
This was a page-turner! This book takes us on a ride on how the first contact with aliens might happen in a world dominated by social media. I am jumping into the sequel right away :) cannot wait to read what happens next!
One of the finest book I read about Babbage and Ada. Great story telling and fun for young readers :)
Echo pushes the boundaries of genre, form, and storytelling. I highly recommend listening to the book rather than reading it because it has fantastic music. It's available on Spotify and Audible.
The book is about the journey of Harmonica and the role it played in different kids' lives across the war period in the 1940s. The audiobook allowed me to experience these different narratives through the voices of Mark Bramhall, David de Vries, Andrews MacLeod, and Rebecca Soler.
“Echo” is a musical. It is the story of how music transcends words or action, how melody and harmony blend to elevate the mundane to the extraordinary.
This was one such book that I could have finished early but I lingered and did not want the book to finish .... and now that I am done listening, I feel empty!
If you have kids (8+) around you, this could be a great listen-together experience.
This was one of the best love stories I have read in some time. I know it is categorized as Military Sci-Fi, but at its core, it is a love story.
I loved it, it was unputdownable! Love that the protagonist is a common man who gets drafted into the Military, not Hero material but survives tens of thousands of years fighting the forever war.
It is not a technically detailed space opera but what Halderman has done wonderfully is addressing so many different larger issues of the society. Its got fascinating theories regarding eugenics, culture, population control, time dilation, and human behavior, politics, propaganda, and It gives the reader a unique experience of what it would be like to return to a home and society you don't recognize.
The ending of this book is a treat! It's so good that I do not want a sequel, was it even needed? I am not too keen on picking up.
The Forever War is a unique and imaginative look into one man's life as he travels into the future.
Highly recommended!
Love it !
Book definitely has some amazing quotes :)
“But I must start at the beginning, if I can find it. Beginnings are elusive things. Just when you think you have hold of one, you look back and see another, earlier beginning, and an earlier one before that. Even if you start with “Chapter One: I Am Born, “ you still have the problem of antecedents, of cause and effect.”
Okay, I thought it is going to be a story of a grumpy old man with an off-putting or unenjoyable attitude but it's oddly charming. I eventually built an unexpected affection for the old man.
We all have much deeper connections to the world and people around us than we think.
“What if we stopped celebrating being busy as a measurement of importance? What if instead, we celebrated how much time we had spent listening, pondering, meditating, and enjoying time with the most important people in our lives?”
Eliminating Non-Essential from your life every day is easier said than done but this book provides an excellent framework to get you started. If you could do half of what is recommended in this book it would have a life-changing effect.
Highly recommended read at least to relook at the choices we make every day and do an audit of our lifestyle.
If I have one takeaway from this it is - “If you don't prioritize your life, someone else will.”
I listened to the audiobook and just loved the narration by 10-12 year old kid. Audiobook version highly recommended.
Indeed School of Life!
It is a tough read and you keep wondering why this is not taught in school or at home. Some sections would need repetitive reading to comprehend fully, but well worth it.
It's the kind of book you should re-read every few years.
Spiegelman changed my perception of comics forever. For those who never truly understood what the holocaust was all about, this book is must read. Illustrations still haunt me every time I read this book. Some great art work done to show the darkest days of humanity.
Must must must read !
“There is a place where times stands still. Raindrops hang motionless in air. Pendulums of clocks float mid-swing.”
“Who would fare better in this world of fitful time? Those who have seen the future and live only one life? Or those who have not seen the future and wait to live life? Or those who deny the future and live two lives?”
This one is a very thought-provoking take on the concept of “Time”. Each chapter then is a thought experiment. The book is full of original ideas mentioned in every chapter and some of these ideas make you think really hard about how we perceive time and life in general. There are moments of sublime beauty and unexpected humor in the book as well.
Overall, a lot of “What-if” questions came to my mind post this book.
