Well that was one messed up, dysfunctional relationship! Not many likeable characters are there? Nick so obviously hated women and yet turned out to be the ‘Good Guy', while Amy was strong and intelligent but a complete psychopath!! But that was the point wasn't it?
I was a little disappointed with the ending (although I can see the beauty of letting Amy win) only because I have such a innate sense of justice, and can't stand someone not getting what they deserve. I would have liked to see Amy exposed - but then I suppose, she wouldn't be Amy ;)
Thrillingly addictive
Shame on all my Aussie friends for not insisting I read this as soon as I became a citizen. Should be required reading. Beautiful, poignant and funny. It's so much more than a whodunit. I loved it.
I loved the vast majority of this book. It wasn't really about a killer clown, it was about childhood and friendship and adventure. It was about facing your fears and retaining your innocence. The magic is real.
It would have been five stars if not for a really disturbing and totally unnecessary part near the end - the way out (if you have read it you will know of which I speak).
I don't often read crime fiction, however, I always make an exception for Alex Cross.
I first read this book when I was 14 and had very fond memories of it. I decided it was time for a re-read and discovered that I remembered only a fraction of it. So it felt like I was reading it for the first time. I loved it all over again. Thank you Harper Lee for a true timeless classic.
A beautifully written story about lost oppotunities in love - how a rash decision can lead to a lifetime of regret.
I LOVED this book! Who knew narration of a 5 year old could be so insightful. Jack makes some very keen observations as he struggles to come to terms with the strange Outside. Read it!
2.5 stars. As beautifully written and well researched as this is, it was not an enjoyable read. It really felt like a chore to pick up. Such a pity. I may not be in the correct headspace for this though (we are all filled with anxiety atm) I will probably continue series, but on audio at 1.5x speed.
I loved that every chapter was its own mini story, and each story so beautifully written and engrossing. I cried at the end.
Well thank you Libba Bray got getting me out of my reading slump! That was five stars of pure fun. Just what I needed.
I really struggled to get into this book. I found the narrator's refusal to use a first person pronoun (I, my etc) really distracting at first, however after 100 pages or so the prose began to flow. By the end of the novel I loved it. I felt completely outraged by the injustices Harrison had to face, and a book that made me feel that strongly about a fictional character must be worth reading. Stick with it, and it will reward you.
While I love the magic of Enid Blyton, I was disappointed that the majority of the adventures and rescues were instigated by the boys. The girls seemed to cry a lot, and need protecting. Perhaps I shouldn't re-read my childhood favourites after all.
I enjoyed the majority of it, although at times I found it disjointed - as though the author was trying to tell too many stories at the same time. It could have been a lot shorter. But still good. I'll continue the series.
Great read. Although, doesn't it bug anyone that Lyra has such God-awful, cold parents. Poor kid.
Interfering Emma means well, but can be slightly annoying. Still I applaud her unshakable belief in love and the “perfect match.”
A light, easy read without much substance. Although I suspect I am not part of the target demographic for a teen romance :)
Uurgh. Dry, dull and dense (the 3 disaster D's). I absolutely loved Atonement- but all other McEwan books have fallen short - I think it's time I break up with him.
A fascinating read of interconnected stories. David Mitchell knows how to bring his characters to life and I felt like a knew every one of them by the end.
Wow! I adore the structure of this novel, and it deserves 5 stars just for that, however my complete love of it was sealed after reading the final entry in Ewing's journal. Chills.
I'm obviously missing something, but Kelly Link stories read like this: “ A man was walking on a black beach. A wave bit his finger off. He saw a purple cloud. The end. “ Just don't get it. Too absurd for me.
DNF @ 45%
It's a pity this sat on my shelf for so many years. I love a good retelling - but after reading the glorious A Thousand Ships, Circe and Heroes - I can't help but compare, and this one just falls flat for me. Sorry ☹️
