Solid outing for a debut novel, if a bit over the top. Look forward to reading Hostage so I can compare and contrast.
Definitely enjoyed this more than her last one, a great premise and handled (mostly) well. But the ending left me confused.
Man, I'm torn on this one. I really, really wanted to like this, so I probably went into this with inflated expectations and finished with a profound sense of disappointment. This book spent way too much time on certain elements, ran at least 50 pages too long, and ended as if the author just got tired of it. It swayed wildly between some kind of North American magical realism and old-school dark comedy, but never landed anywhere. This had so much promise and the main character was the only thing that kept me turning pages, even though I wish I hadn't.
Best book I've read this year and def top 5 over the last two years. Great blending of genres.
I struggled to get through the pretentiousness of the early chapters of this book, and once I did, it gave way to predictability. Without spoiling anything I'll just say that this book is a prime example of proving what used to be a subversion into a trope. In short, the ending is trash.
Thoroughly enjoyed this but couldn't help but compare it to Walter Mosley's Easy Rawlins series – complete with a single-named, psychotic sidekick. Would have given this a four and a half if that were an option.
Best book I've read in a minute. It was like a breath of fresh air, honestly. Albeit laced with a lot of dust and bloodshed. Can't wait to see what else this guy does.
Great premise and a strong start whithers as a lack of exposition and real conclusion doom this book's chances. The vague ending is meant to feel edgy but comes across as lazy, or as if the author simply ran out of time and had to get the manuscript to the printer.
Somehow, this exceeded the debut of the series by being even more endearing and charming.
Good premise and (mostly) good delivery. This could have benefited from about 20 more pages to make for a better ending.
Better than the similar one that dropped at the same time. Far less technical, much more human.
This turned out better than any right it had to be. However, that ending left a lot to be desired.
