Got me out of a reading slump for sure. Was so fast paced, loved the short alternating time line chapters. About the last hundred pages in part two I dropped my rating from a 4 to a 3.5. The plot just became too convoluted and the “big bad” and their reasoning was confusing.
The mystery of the first little bit did keep me engaged, however, soon I was rushing through this book but more so to finally be done rather than wanting to know what happened. The book was so slowly paced and nothing exciting really happened until about the last 10% and I wasn't satisfied by any of the reveals. I found the story to be way too far fetched and ridiculous, even for me. I didn't like the side story of Acelia and I could have cared less about the outcome. None of the characters were redeeming and it was just boring. I would have enjoyed it more as a lifetime movie or something.
I liked the descriptions of the desert, and the beginning of the book. The end kind of fell off for me, I just don't know if I'm smart enough for this. Much of the last 1/3 went over my head. The afterward was great!
Having dual timelines, interviews, and newspaper articles I thought this would be so great. I can't help feeling that this was trying to be a Taylor Jenkins Reid book. Neither the flashbacks or present day chapter were done particularly well. I hated the characters and the way Emily just shrugged off everything Chess had done like that?!?!? Stupid. nothing about this book shocked me. It did pick up the last 1/4, but I had debated putting it down several times. I wanted this to be so much better!
This was my first book by this author and I picked it up because I had heard rave reviews. While I liked the author's writing style, I felt that this book was way too long. The woodsy parts while atmospheric were dragging, and I was skimming through them. I liked the dual perspective but didn't feel particularly attached to either. The killer did surprise me though!
For a young adult thriller, this was pretty good. I have to remember it was not going to be as dark as the books I'm used to. But it kept me entertained. I loved the horror movie references and the ending really reminded me of scream. However, the book is way too long for no reason. Almost 500 pages and the true tension doesn't really happen until the last 100. I was expecting it to be a little darker, and a little more thrilling but then again, it is young adult. I did enjoy the twists. I saw it coming that one of the group was in on it, but didn't expect them all to be and it was one huge fear test. I also really liked the idea that this was only one “chap” or chapter and there were Mary Shelley Clubs all over. There could be a prequel of Rachel's Long Island Incident, but much shorter please!
I just really didn't like this. I didn't like the involvement and reasoning of the characters, it was confusing, and the ending was so pointless I was rolling my eyes. So glad I saved my money and skipped it this month on BOTM.
This book started off good I enjoyed the dual perspective and the mystery factor of how it would all come together at the end. The middle was very slow and very repetitive, and I started not liking it after Maggie dies, and the flashback chapter starts. The twist blew me away, how “Ben” was Aimee's long-lost brother. It's been awhile since a twist had took me by that much of a surprise. It was disgusting, and the fact that she STILL sleeps with him after finding out (and becomes pregnant!!!!!) I found no character likable, they all really annoyed me. The twist saved the book for me, even though I hated it, it was shocking and made the boring parts worth it.
This kept me flipping the pages and had a pretty unexpected plot twist. Unfortunately I feel like it was way too long, and it felt very repetitive and I wanted to just get on to it. I didn't like a single character.
Almost DNF at about 40% but kept at it because of the great reviews about the amazing twists. This book was so dull. The writing was boring, there was hardly any dialogue, the characters were so unlikeable and unrealistic. Should have DNF'd. First book by this author, I don't know if the writing is for me. So sad because the plot sounded so good.
The middle section dragged a bit with the introduction of too many minor characters for my liking, and some parts were corny, but overall it was a fun time
Loved part 1 but the other parts were not as interesting, very confusing, and felt like they were part of a different book. The writing also felt pretentious.
Was just as fun as the first one. I loved the fun additions of the cruise ship, the Sirens, and C.C's spa. I liked that Grover was not in this as much, I find him the most annoying of the trio. The only thing I didn't like (though I understand for the storyline) were the dreams Percy would have. A cliffhanger ending, excited to see where it goes.
Thought I would love this, but was really struggling. I don't know if it was the unlikeable characters, the slow plot, or the writing style that did it for me.
This is one of the authors that got me into thrillers, but it just didn't do it for me. Way too many one dimensional characters to keep track of and some did not fit into the story at all. I know it would have all come together, but it couldn't keep me reading. Loved the premise, just messily executed.
This was super interesting at first, but the constant switch between multiple storylines (I only cared about Chloe's) and the clinical writing style took me out
This was fine. Very predictable and not as fun as I hoped. Also did not love the writing style.
This book had too many side storylines going on, but yet was so boring at the same time. I looked up the ending and figured out one storyline Luke kidnapped Sienna and was on track to others Nat had more of a connection to Meghan than we thought. The twist of Caitlyn and Nat being the same person may have surprised me, but this was not compelling enough to keep reading
I feel like I'm in a reading slump. I was very excited for this book because I love Dolly, Tennessee, and thrillers but I just could not get into it. I don't know if it was the writing style, or that it was a slow start but I'm disappointed that this wasn't the hit I imagined it would be.
This went on far too long and a lot of the plot was confusing with Hannah jumping all over the place. There were way too many characters to keep track of, and none of them really had a clear voice. I might continue with the series at some point, I'm hoping much of the confusion goes away with the next books and all the characters were just introductions
Loved the concept, but did not care for Bobby at all and something about the writing style felt choppy
